Lander: Liminal Sky: Oberon Cycle Book 2 Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

The world needs saving, again.

Xander and Jameson thought they’d fulfilled their destiny when they brought the worlds of Oberon and Titania back together, but their short-lived moment of triumph is over.

Reunification has thrown the world into chaos. A great storm ravaged Xander's kingdom of Gaelan, leaving the winged skythane people struggling to survive. Their old enemy, Obercorp, is biding its time, waiting to strike. And to the north, a dangerous new adversary gathers strength, while an unexpected ally awaits them. In the midst of it all, Xander’s ex Alix returns, and Xander and Jameson discover that their love for each other may have been drug-induced.

Are they truly destined for each other, or is what they feel artificial? And can they face an even greater challenge when their world needs them most?

Titania Map

Xander looked up to take in the view that had captivated him before. The sky was a light pink, so different from Oberon’s green-tinted blue. Cirrus clouds streaked the sky above. The silver moon had moved, and now was framed in the center of the glass ceiling.

“It’s called Bandia,” Quince said. “Come on. There’s more to see.” She led them to the doors of the great hall and flung them open to let in the fresh air.

The place was deserted, but what a glorious desertion. They stood at the top of a wide stair. The courtyard below them and the wall behind them were made from the same bright white stone—in sharp contrast to the black stone of the House of the Sky that they had just left behind.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I'm not sure I can do justice to this book with a mere review, but I'll try. I loved the first book, Skythane, but Lander surpasses it... Oh, my goodness, I could not put this book down! ... Very exciting, well worth the wait for the next episode. I can tell you no more without risk of spoilers. Sorry (not sorry)!" --Becky Condit, USA Today HEA Blog

"Yes, it's beautifully written. But it's more than that. It's vast. It's huge on every scale you can think to rate a story. It hits home emotionally, it's suspenseful, it grabs at you intellectually, keeps you thinking about all the possibilities that may lie in store, and yes, makes you anxiously await the final chapter... What joy!" --Melanie, Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

"A wonderful, exciting, adventurous story leads the reader in a heart stopping journey of answers and danger with the need to protect. I loved the entire story and was on the edge of my seat awaiting the outcome. I was not disappointed in the least. Brilliantly written with amazing details and battles left me breathless." --Shorty, MM Good Reads

About the Author

Scott spends his time between the here and now and the what could be. Ushered into fantasy and sci-fi at the tender age of nine by his mother, he devoured her library of Asimovs, Clarkes, and McCaffreys. But as he grew up, he wondered where the gay people were in speculative fiction. He decided it was time to create the kinds of stories he couldn't find at Waldenbooks. If there weren't queer characters in his favorite genres, he would write them himself. His friends say Scott's brain works a little differently-he sees relationships between things that others miss, and often gets more done in a day than most folks manage in a week. He transforms traditional sci-fi, fantasy, and contemporary worlds into something unexpected. He also runs Queer Sci Fi and QueeRomance Ink with his husband Mark, sites that bring LGBTIQA communities together to celebrate fiction that reflects queer life and love.

Scott inhabits the space between the "here and now" and the "what could be". He was shepherded into his love affair with fantasy and sci fi by his mother at the tender age of nine, and soon read her entire library. But as he grew up and read more, he wondered where all the gays were.

He came out as gay at 23, and decided to create the stories he couldn't find at his local bookstore. He reimagined his favorite genres, subverting them and remaking them to his own ends with a universe of diverse characters. And every now and then he hopes someone finds and enjoys them.

His friends say Scott's mind works a little differently - he sees connections between things that many people miss, and accomplishes more in a day than many people do in three.

Scott's fiction subverts expectations and transforms traditional science fiction, fantasy, and contemporary life into something fresh and unexpected. He manages both Queer Sci Fi and QueeRomance Ink with his husband Mark to promote and celebrate fiction that reflects their worldview, and is an associate member of the Science Fiction Writer's Association (SFWA).

He infuses his work with love, beauty and power, making them soar, and hopes they will change the world, just a little.

Scott was recognized as one of the top new gay authors in the 2017 Rainbow Awards, and his debut novel "Skythane" received two awards and an honorable mention.

Scott lives with his husband of 25 years in Sacramento, California, in a small yellow house with two pink flamingoes in front.

I was glad that there was a sequel to Skythane, and liked that the unfolding of the love story gave a rather different flavor to the book while inhabiting the same world.

A war story, a people's struggle against oppression and greed, a story of a strange other world, and at the novel's heart, its core, a love story. What strikes me as I write this is what Scott talks about in his Author's Notes, the layers. Yes, this the love story of Xander and Jameson. two skythanes (winged humans) and its complications, is the heart, but there is also the love story of Quince and Robyn, and the layers of past lovers. Three are the layers of history--who are the Ithani, and what part have they played in making this world, creating these winged people, and if they come back, what then? There are the layers of the war, OberCorp, the planetary corporation, and what they want and yet, there is the layer of a mother and son...

Good stuff. Kept me reading.

The story of *Skythane* continues, in a world peopled by the generation ship from Coatsworth's "Liminal Sky" series (which see). There is war between factions of humans, both standard-issue and the flying "skythanes". The story continues in the third volume of the trilogy. These are SF romances laced with elements of fantasy.

So much action happens in this book. And just when you think it is safe.... Think again. I do hope Morgan comes out on in the next book. He stole my heart.
