The purpose of this book is to share my understanding of service-oriented architecture. SOA is an architectural pattern in software in which application components provide services to other components.

This book has three parts. The first part explains fundamental SOA principles. The second part shows how we can synergize SOA with clouds, business intelligence, mobility, Big Data, and other applications. Finally, I discuss the future of SOA.

I wrote this book primarily to satisfy my curiosity about emerging technologies and established architectural principles and, more broadly, marketplace success or failure. I’ve spent my working life as a consultant where I have seen at the grassroots level the best and the worst of more than a dozen brand-name corporations.

I’ve worked for JP Morgan/Chase, Wells Fargo, American Express, Honeywell, Boeing, Intel, and other leading companies as an architect, analyst, integrator, and as a developer with forty years of information technologies experience.

My experience and analysis arrive at the same conclusion. Executives who play it safe by holding on to legacy practices and systems put their company in peril. Conservative that’s-the-way-we’ve-always-done-things impulses erode branding and surrenders market share to the competition. There’s a better way and SOA shows us the way.

Much of this book consists of my peer-reviewed white papers. It has been my privilege to encounter some of the world’s greatest architects on topics I’ve raised. I’m grateful for their help in helping me to develop thought leadership that puts me ahead of the curve in such areas as federated SOA, the ethics of big data, and catalysts to changes of corporate culture.

Educated on three continents, I’ve a strong multinational orientation and have led several offshore teams. I’m a signatory to both the Agile Manifesto and the SOA Manifesto. I’ve published three business books How to Do Business With the People’s Republic of China and How to Buy and Manage Income Property through Prentice-HalI.

I’m a co-author of Next Generation SOA: A Concise Introduction to Service Technology & Service-Orientation. After a decade of innovation in technology and practice, SOA is now a mainstream computing discipline, capable of transforming IT enterprises and optimizing business automation. In Next Generation SOA, top-selling SOA author Thomas Erl and a team of experts present a plain-English tour of SOA, service-orientation, and the key service technologies now used to build sophisticated contemporary service-oriented solutions.

I’ve also published other non-fiction and fiction books through my imprint Blue Kitten Books.

so a cup of coffee would make our day!
