T.C. Edge (Toby to his friends) grew up in the lush green countryside of Southern England with 2 parents, 3 brothers, and a whole farmyard's worth of animals. He spent his childhood years wishing he could be a Jedi. Or Super Saiyan. Or just a superhero of some kind. In the end, he decided that such things weren't possible and chose to satisfy himself as a writer instead.

As an avid movie fan, Toby likes to create highly cinematic books where he can truly let his imagination run wild. So instead of writing stories based in the 'real world', he creates worlds of his own, casting his mind ahead hundreds of years to present alternate visions of the future. His dystopian realities are typically harsh and brutal, and often contain characters with wonderful abilities and powers.

Top reviews from the United States

Spoiler free review:

Don’t listen to the reviews about spelling/grammar issues, there were maybe like 5 or 6 in the whole book, and it’s a big book! Plus you’ll be devouring the book so fast you probably won’t notice. It’s very worth the read. The characters, the world, the plot are all very well written. Reminds me a bit of the Eragon series, but still very distinct and different.

The main characters are well rounded and likable and even when they’re not being particularly likable they’re relatable. At the start, it’s a little slow and there are a lot of names and places, but the map at the beginning is very well done and fun to consult throughout the book. After about a quarter of the way through you’ll have a better grasp of who the main players are, and the switching of perspectives is done flawlessly and without much of a time gap. Which means no shortcuts to storytelling that often occur with similar novels, which I find to be one of the most irritating things in literature. If someone sets out on a separate journey, show it instead of just skipping ahead to when the destination has been reached. TC Edge does this superbly!

This is shaping up to be a long epic with many twists and turns! I’d rate this first book in the series as an 8/10 and couldn’t put it down over the past two days. Don’t hesitate in picking it up, you’ll thank me later!

Exhilarating! Good world building and wonderfully interesting characters. The plot continues to thicken throughout the book, with good twists. The who is working with who and who will betray who is going to be interesting. I hope the next book is also a page turner!

On of the best fantasy worlds I've ever read. Comparable to the Wheel of Time world. Looking forward to book two.

What do you want in a book? To make you want to read the next one. This one does that.

This book is masterful. Every character demonstrates enormous strengths and weaknesses of mind and body. While we may presume victory for the heroes in their quest, we steel ourselves for the blazing forges of their characters in the coming war. Grim struggles are ahead. The anticipation of victory is sullied by the temptation to abandon noble virtue to take up the evil methods of the foe during the of battle.

I love the storyline, characters, and worlds built in this book. It has a unique and intriguing plot with a few twists which kept me interested in the storyline. The characters are well developed, almost over developed, and it’s easy to become invested in each of their plights.

That being said, I struggled to finish this book due to pages upon pages of descriptions of the worlds & character back stories. This truly caused the storyline to proceed at a snails pace until about 75% of the story was read. At the 75% point, the storyline progressed much quicker and I was glad I had struggled thru.

I love long epic fantasy stories but at times the descriptions were so long it felt like filler and not true needed info. Not every River, mountain, or town tavern needed 2-3 pages of description for the reader to get a mental picture of the area!

This is not a page turner until the last 25% of the book. I had to put it down often out of frustration. If you can make it thru the first 75% of the book, the last 25% is well worth the time and read.

I just devoured this great book. This is my first book by this talented author. His writing style made reading this book a pleasure. His ability to make me feel as if I knew some of the main characters personally was magical. I had feelings of love, hate, happiness and sadness as if I was personally involved. Pure Genius. I have not felt like this about a book for a very long time. Thank you Mr Edge. I would say this book is as good as A Song of Fire and Ice in my very humble opinion.

I have read the first four books in the series and am about to start book 5. If you like fantasy with lots of knights, dragons, heros, heroines, twists and turns in a fast moving plot, that has you holding you breath for hours... then this series is for you. Can't wait to read the final book, then I will decide which T.C.Edge book to read next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Toby's Style Of Writing Has Grown Up Tremendously for this book and series to come!

I was sent this as an ARC reading. I received no financial remuneration for reading it, not for this review.
Know that I love to read epic fantasy, with complete backstories, fully fleshed out, rounded individuals, who know where they come from (mostly) and some idea of where they would like to get to. This story has all that.
It is shaping up to be somewhat Feistian in its completeness.
If you are looking for teenage fluff here, look again. This is not a story written around a teen-angst filled world.
Each country is different and the people's who live in it are too. Some view neighbouring countries as alien places, with alien people whose lives and choices are wildly different from their own and are viewed as strange and somewhat suspiciously. Others are more similar, have people who are similar who are viewed as friends.
Saskia has an unusual, interesting life. I could see her and Elyon meeting in the future, maybe, although under what circumstances I couldn't begin to guess... Yet! I do feel quite sure that her background has much more yet to be revealed..
And Elyon has quite a bit of growth left in his story too. How will he handle going off to war without his expected family or most trusted friends
That's all to look forward to in the books to come... I, for one, can't wait!
Awesome work Tobe... Keep it up!

5.0 out of 5 stars So far so good.....

Where to start?
I know, if you have not read any of T.C. Edge's books before, I don't think that you will be disappointed.
He is a young adult writer and in my opinion a very good one at that, I have read and enjoyed all of his books.
I like that he writes in the YA category as it means for me personally I don't have to put up with over the top bad language and sex, and I am not embarrassed to recommend Toby's books, to family or friends.
Most of his books are written in a dystopian future world, with people with enhanced powers , he builds characters! some with flaws and some with redeeming qualities. He is not frightened to give his characters a good dose of self doubt making them real .
The bladeborn saga is a new direction for him set in a time of knights and swords and battles and the good overcoming the evil, a bit like game of thrones with twists and turns. This is only the first book and as I have already wrote so far so good, I look forward to reading more...
