Unit 2 - From waveforms to spectra (vowel formants) (Hands-on Phonetics) Kindle Edition
The Hands-on Phonetics series is designed to serve as an introduction to both the field of acoustic phonetics and the acoustic analysis program Praat. Praat (the Dutch word for talk) is free analysis software that continues to be developed by Paul Boersma and David Weenink of the University of Amsterdam. By using our hands-on approach to Praat, a beginner can do powerful acoustical analyses using professional software while learning about acoustic phonetics. What makes the Hands-on Phonetics series unique is its flexibility. You select the units that meet your needs to acquire the level of expertise you desire.
Each unit in the series is available separately, allowing you to purchase only those units relevant to your goals. We recommend that the beginner start with the first two units to get a grounding in the visualization of speech using Praat, and then select from more specialized acoustic topics including consonantal features, intonation, and more advanced Praat skills including recording techniques, data management, text grids, and scripting. Each unit will use the tutorial format to take the learner step-by-step through Praat, using examples and exercises to apply this powerful tool to real-world linguistic phenomena.
Unit 2 builds on the acoustic basics from unit 1 and applies them to vowels. Vowels are a frequently studied area of speech, and this unit will use Praat to introduce vowel composition and teach methods for measuring acoustic properties of vowels. These skills will then be applied to real world questions.
At the end of this unit you will find a supplement, How to Record Using Praat.
