A Brief Financial History of the United States Kindle Edition

2.0 2.0 out of 5 stars 2 ratings

I find timelines the best way to keep history straight, and that’s what this book is, a brief annotated timeline of the financial history of the United States. I wrote it a couple of years ago when I was researching the financial mess we were in, in order to explain it to my Economic students. I kept going further and further back in order to make sense of what I was finding.
This is a book for those everyday-type people who want to understand what is going on, but don’t have a significant amount of financial/economic background. But, don’t worry, I use footnotes liberally – I had to look up many of these financial expressions, people, events, and terms, and I share that information throughout the book.

Warning, this book is written by a fiscal conservative, and it shows!

I also happened to be teaching a class on Benjamin Franklin at the time I started this study. I noticed that he had some sayings that applied to this topic – I’ve sprinkled a few of those throughout the book.

At the request of a friend, I’ve also sprinkled “Catherine’s commentary” throughout. Those appear as CC: ____

I downloaded the Kindle sample of this book, and was hooked. This was definitely the book I had been looking for! The part of the book that is in the sample is this detailed timeline overview, and the sample goes through about the early to mid 1800s.
So, I bought the full Kindle edition. I was quite disappointed: that little timeline at the beginning of the book (which I thought was just a guide to the rest of the book) is all that there is! Not only that, but significant events were completely left out (the indebtedness of colonial farmers due to repurchasing money at less than face value, Bretton Woods/IMF, and many others).
I would really like to see the author rewrite this book with the following changes:
1. Add in some of the missing significant events.
2. Remove most of the detail from the timeline so that it really is just an index/timeline
3. Write the rest of the book with the timeline as a guide, going into the details. I.e., make this into a textbook based on the timeline!

Without that, this is just very poor Cliff notes for a book that should exist, but doesn't.

This is a subject that can turn many people off and also can get quite boring. I really enjoyed the book and learned a lot about our financial history. Would definitely recommend for those who want the short & sweet version.
