Sack and Destruction of Columbia, S. C. [1865] Kindle Edition
A firsthand detailed account of this event by the leading author in the antebellum South who "was upward of thirty years one of the most prolific and one of the most popular of American authors." Simms' graphic word picture of this premeditated hate crime against a region as well as a city--in which his own home and possessions were destroyed--is 84 pages of primary source material.

Filled with bits of information I had never heard before..incredibly interesting. This account was written right after the burning and destruction.

William Gilmore Simms is one of the great writers of the 19th century. He writes this account revealing his zeal for the South, disdain for the North, and actual first hand account of what he saw Sherman's Army do in Columbia, S.C. in Februay 1865. This is a must read for anyone interested in knowing what it was like to live through Sherman's destruction of the South during the Civil War.
