4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 19 ratings

First in Series: A Midtown Murder Mystery.
Psychic profiler Clara Carson and the unlikely detective, Jack Jackson, join forces in solving their first cold case murder mystery.
The Friday night before Christmas, 1953, an elegant old Cadillac crashes through a fence and plunges into an abandoned quarry, killing its sole occupant. The death is ruled a suicide and the case is filed away and forgotten.
Thirty years later, Jack Jackson buys the dead woman's derelict house from her only heir, who is clearly insane. He ignores the daughter's final warning, but is unable to overlook what he discovers during restoration of the house.
Was Madeline Montrose actually murdered? And if so, by whom?

Once I started the book I couldn't put it down. Without spoiling the plot for others I can report that the reader is introduced to the basic events that become the focus of the book later as the timeline of the story develops in a "cold case" fashion. With vivid details and descriptions of characters, locations, and event that the author has become known for, the reader can visualize the story as Mr. Bailey tells it. He hooked me on the story in the first dozen or so pages. Find a comfy chair, relax with your favorite beverage, curl up with 'My Lady's Chamber 'and be entertained. Another great read from Alan Bailey and I am looking forward to his next mystery.

By the way, you can pretty much disregard the review by Leapin Literary Lurkers who is apparently doesn't like anything he/she reads and doesn't understand that the author has no control over how Kindle content shows up on the reader - strange word and page breaks for example.

Love the stories within the story. Recommend this book for those who love a good mystery. Very much enjoyed the Springfield MO setting for the story.

I enjoyed this book. Bailey tells a good story with an unexpected twist. Not great literature, but certainly fun! I recommend it for a pleasant diversion from the seriousness of the world!

In retrospect, this book was kind of a protracted mishmash of ghosts, psychics, old-house restoration and the tiniest whiff of a gay relationship tied into a presumed murder decades before.

I felt the book was divided into two halves. The first part dealt extensively with the restoration aspects of an old home that seems to have a resident ghost or two that needed to be dealt with before the story moves into what ostensibly was the main "mystery" portion.

The whole set-up required the suspension of belief which I found quite difficult. The psychics were introduced somewhat suddenly, and the reader was expected to accept them fully blown as they informed the main character that HE was psychic (to some extent) as well.

There was a sprinkling of typos misusing the soundalike forms of words like discreet/discrete and complement/compliment plus numerous instances of weirdly separated words, e.g., " ho use," but I could figure out what was intended---not too bad as ebooks go. Probably a 2.5 for me.

Fortunately, the latter half of the book did resolve the mystery, and the author demonstrated decent writing skills but given the subject matter and l-o-n-g lead-in before the actual story began, I am unlikely to read another book by Mr. Bailey.

I loved, loved, loved this book - partly because it is set in Springfield, MO, and Alan describes alot of things about Springfield at that time period. I also liked that it was suspenseful and kept your attention but also full of surprises. It is an easy read and keeps you in it until the very last chapter. Good work Alan!!!

This is a good read, although the first half is better than the last. Things seem to get wrapped up just a bit too conveniently, and I feel if the author had just taken a bit more time and worked the storyline round in a better way it would have been a more satisfying ending. It was too unbelievable in the final scene with the baddie - I can't go into further detail without giving away spoilers.I do enjoy this author but just wish he'd somehow kept up the suspense all the way through.
