Life-altering magic, struggles for survival, and clashes with deep-seated inner demons.

When a horde of beastmen ravage the capital, Lidria Avar is coaxed out of her self-imposed isolation to help the survivors. She’s convinced, however, she has little more to offer than her sword. Her viewpoint begins to shift after she saves a young boy who reminds her of her estranged daughter.

Lidria meets Selis, an apprentice mage, and aids her in escaping from under her paranoid master’s thumb. An interaction between Selis and an enemy shaman reveals a link between her master, herself, and the beastmen. Selis obsesses over answering the questions burning within her, leading to dire consequences.

Lidria and Selis bond as they work together to ensure their countrymen’s survival, figure out the mystery behind Selis’ connection with the beastmen, and find a place where they themselves belong.

I got my start writing back in high school, but it was simply a hobby. That hobby turned into a passion, and, after fifteen years, I decided to turn that passion into something more than a simple hobby.

I really enjoyed this book. It made you feel like you were there. I liked the story line and the interactions of the characters.

The blurb says it all; it is about two women with baggage in a world that has magic, and where beasts with possibly more magic are fighting the humans.
We find out why towards the end when there is hope of peace.

I liked the pretty pendant on the cover and bought this book to see what it did in magical battles. I was disappointed.

Some of the phrases in the book are unexpectedly charming, some humorous, but many typos stop a smooth read. To paraphrase a sentral idea in the book, they stop the FLOW.

'The twenty by twenty chamber carved out a simple but clean place.'
'The Quelan took shaky, ponderous steps forwards.'
'And who do I have the pleasure of threatening me?'
'I will take responsibly for your disobedient actions and deal with you accordingly.'
'She would need to remember to eat more frequent.'
'Her blade cut into the creature's neck, blood spurting from the gouge.'
'Several soldiers adorned in officer pins filed out.'

The fighter half of the main duo can use the magic on her prosthetic arm to boost her strength in battle. She has many self-castigating thoughts, perhaps brought on by her connection to a little boy. The non fighting mage is busy doing magical research all the while angrily learning of her master's deception. As time passes both women start to feel attracted to each other, by passing other people, male and female, who were also interested in a relationship.

I found the book a bit boring. The flowery language, nice in another tale, removed the crisp feel of battle. The constant mental whinging was a bit off-putting, too.

Lidria has fought the beastmen for sometime. Now she has a chance for romance with Selis a mage. This is a very unique story by Andrew Landis in that the two main characters are female. The book itself is full of action and drama. I enjoyed it very much.

Interesting story. Highly recommend.

I received this book as a Goodreads giveaway. I thought the premise of this book had a lot of potential. Parts of it were really imaginative and interesting, but I wish the author had spent more time developing the back story and less time on the slow building romance aspect of this book. Overall, I don't regret the time spent reading it, but the editing needs some work.
