Baby Doll is my first novel, and so much of it is formed by my own childhood experiences.

An identical twin, I was born in Chicago, IL and adopted at six days old, along with my identical twin sister, Heather and carried home in matching red Christmas stockings.

My father was a member of the Overton Gang and spent several years in prison for manslaughter. Unfortunately, he found family life overwhelming. His addictions began to consume him, leading to my parent's divorce. My mother relocated my sister an I to her hometown of Kingsville, Texas. A theater nerd, I spent my childhood dreaming of bright lights and big cities.

My love affair with storytelling led me to New York City where I studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, writing at Hunter College and mixology in Murray Hill. A few years later, I headed to Hollywood with dreams of becoming a star. My sole TV claim to fame was one episode of TNT"s “Leverage,” opposite DB Sweeney. Thankfully, I realized my talents were better suited behind the scenes.

My first screenwriting break came in 2008 when I was accepted into the coveted Warner Brothers Writers Workshop, a boot camp style program for aspiring TV writers. I’ve gone on to write for CBS and Lifetime. I’m currently a writer and Co-Producer on the new Freeform drama Shadowhunters, based on Cassie Clare’s international bestseller “The Mortal Instruments.” There's nothing more I love than working with aspiring TV writers. I currently teach and offer private consults at Script Anatomy.

I live in West Hollywood, CA, with the loves of my life, my rescue Chihuahua, Stevie and my British husband, David. When I’m not writing, I can be found exploring LA (and beyond) with my twin sister, Heather. Sometimes we even let Stevie and David join us.

Loved it from start to end...it kept me hooked all the way

I enjoyed this book and found that I didn't want to put it down. There is bad language sprinkled throughout which I thought wasn't needed and a few sex scenes described but not in detail. I wouldn't compare this book to Gone Girl or Girl on the Train, I felt it was very different from either of those. It didn't have as much mystery as Gone Girl and was more involved than Girl on the Train. I felt the characters in this book were very interesting in the ways that they were different. I don't think I'd label this book as tense or a thriller or even that suspenseful but I did enjoy it and would recommend it (as long as you don't mind the occasional use of bad language).

I really enjoyed this book, and gobbled it up in about two days. Baby Doll centers around two sisters - identical twins, to be precise - and what happens when they are separated by distance and unique traumatic experiences...and then reunited. While there is romance in the book, I found it very refreshing that the primary relationship was between siblings. Overton's personal background as a twin, and as the daughter of a criminal, lends real authenticity to the sisters' voices and conflicts. And getting into the head of Lily's captor is appropriately terrifying and necessary to the narrative. In many ways, the book is reminiscent of the Brie Larson film "Room," but what I preferred about Baby Doll was its emphasis on reconnection rather than isolation - healing rather than breaking down. Packed with fantastic twists and powerful, nuanced characters, Baby Doll is an addictive read. Highly recommend!

Most books I’ve read about being kidnapped focus mainly on the captivity and not the escape, so I liked that this book began with the escape and focused on the aftermath...however, the aftermath just wasn’t realistic at all. The main character seems to overcome her abduction, torture, etc. fairly quickly & I don’t believe that anybody who has been held captive for eight years would be back to living a normal life so quickly. The main character has a daughter, but it seems the author didn’t really know where to go with that character - it seemed ever other page the daughter was “fast asleep” - the author really could’ve added a different perspective by including the daughter more in the storyline. I did like how the story was told from four points of view. But it just wasn’t a very realistic story, and the author seemed to try to throw in random twists and turns to make it thrilling but it just added to how unrealistic it was.

I enjoyed reading this novel, it was a decent read. Not amazing but written well enough that I can say it's a solid 4 stars, especially for a debut novel. The basic plot is that Lily is abducted at age 16 and held for eight years before she escapes. It's the story of her recovering but also about how her family dealt with her missing and her return. It's not on par with "Room" by Emma Donoghue or "Still Missing" by Chevy Stevens, both of which were similar in plot but deeper, faster paced, more emotional I guess. I think her writing will only improve and I'm looking forward to her next book.

I miss reading, and have lost my fervor for it since grad school with its deluge of assignments. But Baby Doll got me back on track. From the first page it had me going, giving up that extra hour of sleep or internet/tv browsing. Hollie Overton is a very thoughtful writer with a talent to dangle, entertain, but above all to tell an open-hearted story. Enlisting the reader's imagination and the grim realities too prevalent in our culture, she tells a tale of survival without sensationalizing gruesome details that might ultimately minimize the horror of Lily's experience. It is a story of flawed, distinct and beautifully strong women, learning to find their way back to each other through a wall of pain with what the world most need now: Love.

It's an odd irony that for a novel dealing with some really uncomfortable issues, Hollie Overton writes comfort so very well. Sprinkled within a terrifying narrative, there are moments of such comfort and family bonding that I immediately wanted to check in with my sisters. I read this book cover to cover at one go because the pacing is absolutely perfect. It turns pages so quickly, and it does so with a clarity that grabs hold of the reader's hand and leads them through a complicated story so quickly and swiftly that I was so bummed when it was over. It made me love my family more, it made me want to put them all in my pockets and keep them closer. It's a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing and addictive

Absolutely amazing writing. It was so hard to put down. The character narration changes didn't upset the pace of the story at all.
I can't express how good this book is. I'm definitely gonna buy another Hollie Overton book. This book sets the bar very high for the author and ever other author in the genre.
As a twin myself, the twin angle was spot on, and as the author is a twin too, it's a very authentic experience that has been beautifully encapsulated and put into this story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed the read, felt a bit rushed
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 3, 2016
I enjoyed this book very much, and only regret that it wasn't longer. As a result of the shorter novel, it felt as though the storyline especially towards the end was very rushed and perhaps a little over dramatic! But the premise is fantastic it has to be said!

In the opening pages, we meet little Skye and her Momma Lily, the latter having been abducted eight long years ago and hidden in a basement - abused, tortured, neglected, and terrified. Skye was born there and does not know anything of the outside world except what Lily has told her. And then one day - one magical day, they escape and go 'home' to Lily's parents and twin sister.

But of course in eight years, everything can change and when you don't know where your twin sister is, or if your daughter is alive, it can put incredible pressure, strain and grief on a marraige, on a heart, on a life... Everything is upside down and anything right is wrong.

Hollie Overton captured these mishmashed emotions so well, and the storyline of Lily trying her best to fit back into her own life while dealing with the fall-out from escaping and all the changes that have occurred since she left was, while dramatic in some places, entirely heart-tugging and so very sad in others.

Would recommend but a note that it does feel rushed.
