Caleb Johnson: Mountain Man: The Last Wagon Train: A Frontier Western Adventure (A Mountain Life Western Adventure Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 930 ratings

The fourth book in the Mountain Life Western Adventure series from Charles Ray!

Flora, Caleb’s Shoshone wife, is pining for her village, and Caleb is at a loss as to what to do about it. But whenever one door closes another opens. The guide for a wagon train passing through Bear Creek falls of his horse and breaks his neck, leaving the settlers without someone to guide them to their new homes. Caleb is not just the best guide in the area, he’s the only guide, and Bear Creek’s sheriff convinces the wagon master to hire him. Since the wagon train is headed for Wyoming, not far from Flora’s village in Utah, Caleb sees a way to cheer her up and make some money at the same time.

Unfortunately, when a door opens, trouble often enters, and Caleb finds his hands full scouting a trail for the cumbersome wagons while, at the same time, trying to figure out what the secretive wagon master is up to.

Things come to a head in a deadly way when they near their destination, and it will take all Caleb’s skills to get out of it alive.

Caleb Johnson sees a way to take his Shoshone wife to visit her tribe by accepting a guide position. This will allow the Johnsons to travel in the general direction of Flora's former home while also earning some money. But all is not as it seems. Kent, leader of the settlers heading to Wyoming, has more grandious plans than settling down to farm the land. He wants to set up his own little fiefdom and do it on Shoshone land. Backed by a large group of Army deserters and two stolen Gatling guns, Kent seems to hold the winning hand. Caleb, however, has other plans.

Read all of the books in order to really enjoy. Storyline continues to grow and develop. Characters are realistic and get better and better.

Certainly five stars worthy, as Mr. Ray is so adept in his ongoing pursuit of unending old frontier folklore adventures that his readers find ourselves completely engrossed from beginning to end. This heartwarming story is filled with one suspenseful episode after the other as the wagon master has ulterior motives from the very beginning. Outstanding storylines throughout the entire book, and his selection of characters were perfectly selected for their commanding assignments throughout the entire story!
Caleb is called upon, once again, to prevent an Indian uprising as the white men try to encroach upon their land. Definitely recommend this compassionately motivated success story to all readers, but especially to you lovers of exceptionally descriptive renditions of realistic old American western folklore adventures. Too you non-western enthusiasts will find yourselves completely mesmerized by the authenticity of the Author's outstanding descriptiveness of how our old American West was probably finally tamed! You are definitely the loser if you fail to follow Caleb, and crew, as they try to save a group of people who, unknowingly, are being swindled by a person of I'll repute!!!

I enjoyed the book so much I couldn’t put it down lots of drama and decisions with very little violence
Caleb and Flora were excellent with the people they met and helped and dog was a treat for the kids on a hell of a journey to the west
Charles Ray is a excellent author

This story makes me wonder how many times it has to be explained how the people prepare their breakfast! It never seems to vary, but has to be explained over a couple of pages as to how it is done each day.
And there are too many other things that have to be repeatedly described in explicit detail.
Makes a boring book to me.

This is a good story and has a great hidden story behind that gives an unusual cast for stories. Enjoy

Has a fair story to it but you could guess what was going to happen in the end but it lacks an ending
