ON KENTISH CHALK: A Farming Family of the North Downs Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

This is an illustrated story of a family of Kent, the County known as “the Garden of England”. It has been vividly set against the turbulent history of the centuries through which they lived. Initially they were struggling hill farmers in years often of famine but occasionally of feast; then they became soldiers in the bloodiest of wars which shaped English society in the late 20th century. Meanwhile they had spread: Henry, aged 16, left the family’s great farmhouse in Kent for gold in Australia, then Frederick followed him but got stuck in the welcome he found in the USA, while his twin brothers came later looking for better farming prospects in Canada. Separately they multiplied, prospered or at least found a degree of fulfilment. Their descendants, the Australian, American, Canadian, and English branches of this now large and flourishing family, recently rediscovered each other, and this book is the result of that reunion.

David Gore was born in India into a family of globetrotting story tellers. Educated in England during World War II, he then travelled as a soldier serving in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and South-East Asia. Inspired by the tales of his youth, his books tell of the exciting lives of his peripatetic ancestors in the context of world or local events. In the 1850s one of his great grandfathers left the family homestead in Kent for the goldfields of Australia where he made a fortune and bred greyhounds [A story included in "On Kentish Chalk"]. Another grandfather, a Scot, left Glasgow for South India in 1837 where he spent more than fifty years ministering to 'the poorest of the poor': he became a celebrated linguist, author of many books and a highly controversial missionary bishop [See "Soldiers, Saints and Scallywags"]. In his first book "A Cornish Inheritance", David describes some extraordinary characters and their various fates following the 'Great Emigration' from Cornwall after the copper and tin mines were forced to close. His "MAYNE One-name Study" is summarised on CD-ROM, and in full (seven books) is at https://www.scribd.com/collections/3524517/MAYNE-One-name-Study

This is the colourful story of an English family, farming and then fighting across three centuries. It runs from the English Civil War, through Napoleon, the two world wars, to the present. Branches of the family spread to the USA, Canada, Australia and India, yet they continued to remember the warmth of the great Parsonage farmhouse in Kent from which they had all sprung. The author, a retired soldier, has woven his tale vividly into the history of the times. He nicely contrasts the hardships of farming high up on the North Downs with the tribulations and separations of the wars in which the good people of Kent often found themselves in the front line. Told with affection and style, this story is an engaging reminder of the history which many of us share.

This is really a history of our times as experienced by the various branches of this old Kentish family. Their stories which spread to Australia, North America, and by war to Europe and India, have been drawn together here in a masterly way. Lavish illustrations include some delightful watercolours of the Kent countryside by Rowland Hilder.
