The Autobiography and Other Writings Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 136 ratings

One of America's most famous patriots, Benjamin Franklin was more than just a founding father of the country. He was a prolific writer, tradesman, scientist, and philosopher who had major influences in France, England, and America. Franklin made it clear through his works that he believed in both spirituality and science at the same time, and he wrote about how the two ideas can converge. He was quite famous during his life, but his fame lives on through his writings and discoveries. In the collection "The Autobiography and Other Writings," audiences can read about Franklin's life from his personal perspective. "The Autobiography" was important in that it was one of the first pieces of American literature that was praised in England. Franklin was very truthful in his tone and the depiction of his life; he wanted others to see his mistakes and learn from them. Also included in the collections are various prose, satire, speeches, and letters from his daily correspondence.

I like this book and enjoy how he accomplish all the things that were in his journal. Like all the many inventions and the virtues that he put for humans.
Great journal.

I used this version for American Literature in high school this year. What I liked about it was that it seemed that Benjamin Franklin was very witty and put that wit into his writing. I liked reading about his life, not just what history books tell us, but more in depth about his childhood and his wife. After reading it, I really wanted to meet him and have a conversation with him. It was a little hard of a read but I don’t love reading.

Wonderful insight into the period leading up to the revolution and Benjamin Franklin's development as a leader.

To the individual who wants to increase his knowledge of one of Americas most unique and important founding fathers: This book is well researched and maintains a detailed account of Franklin's life through his written correspondents. It will certainly garner a greater appreciation for the man and the values he kept loyal to.

To the student: Unless you have a genuine interest/passion for history and an excellent memory of detail, I would recommend this book only to read it for a solid foundation. Afterward, something along the lines of "Spark Notes" would be EXTREMELY beneficial for a good grade.
