For fans of The Walking Dead, The Maze Runner series, and 28 Days Later, Scattered Screams is a diverse take on post-apocalyptic thrillers…

Their cross-country college visit was supposed to be a bonding experience between Marcus and son, Ali.

Then, the Disruption triggered.

Marcus, Ali, and Vic (Ali’s best friend) would have never imagined the sunny summer afternoon on campus would turn into the fight for their lives.

Now the world is split into two parts: before and after the Disruption.

The new world is akin to a war zone. But a war zone with no clear sides. Allies and foes might be one in the same as everyone attempts to survive.

Marcus’s quest to return home to New York City with Ali and Vic before the new disrupted world chips away at their humanity. They attempt to make it across 3,000 miles of terrain that is covered with mutants, enemies and otherworldly threats.

Lines of communication are disabled. The home they strive to return to may not exist anymore.

In a world surrounded by danger and violence, the only constant are the
Scattered Screams.

Best way to get an idea how good a book is, check the stars.

I loved it, and the twist at the end ... cannot wait for the next installment.

Want to know more about what the book is about, read the first few chapters. :-)

This is a pretty well done addition to the zombie novels which are so ubiquitous these days. When I first started reading I thought it was going to be an invasion from outer space. But quickly the author left that suspenseful notion to create zombies and pack attack coyotes. I thought he would have been better off to make the packs of attacking animals dogs. But that is just me. The story moved fairly quickly but lagged a little in some strange places. The descriptions of neighborhoods, areas, places where the main characters, the Nelsons, were located from time to time were either not described at all or only with a broad and perfunctory brush. I thought this was a missed opportunity which could provide some needed suspense to the book.
From my comments you probably think I didn't like the book. That would be wrong. I did like the story but I didn't love it. Perhaps in the sequel the author can fix some of the problems I have identified and some others that existed as well. I hope so because I would like to read the sequel. All i all this was a good read, an enjoyable read for the most part, pretty well edited, with few noticeable errors. I think the author missed an opportunity in this book to make real people out of his characters. There were many places he could have added a paragraph of descriptive terms about the characters which would have enhanced the story. Still I recommend the book for people of all ages. There is no "obligatory sex" involved so it could be a tweens book as well as a teens book with ease.

OK, I will try and not give away too much of this book. My overall description of this offering is "confusing". Let's start with the beginning.

In the beginning, we find our main characters on their way to a college visiting day. They don't have a very good relationship with each other and there is a lot of bickering. No real back story is given for the apparent animosity. Maybe the author just believes that all father and son's enter into a stage of dislike for each other, regardless of a lack of any real problems. The next problem for me occurred right after the "Event". The main characters run to a rooftop sanctuary to escape the carnage happening just below them. In my literary time-sense, it seems to be no longer than about 20 minutes, but according to the conversation between the people already on the rooftop, and the newly arriving survivors; it's been about 2 hours. Doesn't compute.

And then the bickering starts among the people. Remember, according to the timeline, only about 2 hours has elapsed. Half want to make a run for it, half want to stay. The half that want to run are convinced that help is not coming. Why is that? They have no radio. They don't know the extent of the problem; whether it's local or global, yet in 20 minutes or 2 hours, they are convinced that they should make a run for it, despite the horrors that are taking place right underneath them. I know that the story needs to progress, but it would have made more sense to me if the author had simply said.....8 hours later.

And then there's the description of the monsters themselves. There is no description. They are simply called beasts. They are obviously people who have changed, but no real description of them ever occurs. I thought at first that they were simply people who were wild and beast-like in their ferocity. But after reading about them biting people's legs off with a single bite, or biting into someone's chest with ease; some physiological changes must have taken place; like maybe a longer snout, or a larger gape; but sadly, no description is given.

And after our protagonists have been on the run for several days, you would think that they would find some time to discuss amongst themselves what they think might have caused this now large-scale problem. They don't. But they still have plenty of time to display attitude toward one another. I know that this kind of world altering problem would cause me to dispel with any meaningless interpersonal relationship quarrels.

I could go on, but needless to say, it continues in a very confusing and meandering manner. There are a few editing errors, that were annoying, but turned out to be the lesser of several evils.

The only really good thing that I liked was the author's willingness to kill off characters that were not obviously kill fodder. By this I mean; some characters you know are not long for the world; you know that they are only there to die. However, in this book, several characters who I thought were long term.....were suddenly dead! That made me wonder, whenever there was a scene involving monsters, who was gonna get it next. You never knew. That was kinda cool.

This book has possibilities, but also serious liabilities.

The ending has a twist that I won't disclose.....but it may make for a better sequel. We shall see.

I ran through this book. I wish it was longer than it was, because at the end, I was left wanting more. The author did a great job of setting up the suspense, and the characters were believable. Can't wait for the next installment!

First off I LOVED the hip-hop references, I agree T.R.O.Y. is a perfect song, along with Nuthin' But G Thang, Today Was Good Day, and The Message.

Found myself siding with Marcus on everything. He took charge of each different situation they encountered and it didn't seem forced because of the way the author described his personality was well written, easily my favorite character, but I also wanted to know more about brother Patrice because he had super dope taste in hip-hop and passed it to his brother proper.

I'm really sorry to leave a bad review. I can't tell you what's wrong with the book, but it's not right. I gambled on it and lost $2.99. It almost read like a young person wrote it.

I couldn't put it down and now that I'm finished I want more. You have suspense and drama meet the urban upper class in this modern day zombie apocalyptic drama. So vivid, I was there with each character and my heart raced as they traverse the country seeking to escape danger. Just when you thought it was going to slow down and get calm, something would happen. I can see this being turned into a television movie or mini series. Few minor flaws but a great read! Can't wait for book two.
