Top reviews from the United States

Interesting to hear his own voice, though his biographies are a marvel, by his wife, Isabel. Many anecdotes of his experience are so interesting, as he observes the customs and expectations of the people amongst whom he travels. I did expect a bit more though; it seemed a bit truncated.

If you like Burton you'll like this book. Esoteric in the extreme but entertaining and generally interesting.

Among these pages, I opened a rusted door on a subject utterly unfamiliar. This is a book of basic observations from an archival time, the story of men of the Raj sporting with falcons in the fields of India. I found very little in Richard Burton's report that appealed to me. Much of it was off-putting. But the glimpse of differences in time, geography and culture was irresistible and eye-opening.

Evidently falcons were once useful as prey finders. But by the 1852 publication of Burton's book, the practice had already begun to fade into a privileged hobby. While there is much here about the "training" of birds, the word seems more a euphemism for the arrogance of men subjugating a free creature for amusement.

I was over swept by many things I had not imagined and exposed to practices I could never approve let alone defend. Even so, this is a small book well done with old facts fresh to me and period attitudes beyond my embrace. It was, therefore, a sort of education though certainly not an advancement. On balance, the book is an artifact worth the time.
