Steelers Stories Kindle Edition

THIS TIMELY TRIBUTE TO STEELERS FANS WILL GET YOU PUMPED FOR THE 2017 SEASON!
Attention Steelers Nation!

You won't find any staid player statistics, by-the-numbers game summaries or tedious team histories here. This Steelers book teems with the passion and pride Pittsburgh has for its football team. It's told through a multitude of intimate fan portraits that put a face on Steelers Nation.

Journalist John Luciew, a life-long Steelers fan and twenty-year season ticket holder, takes to the streets of Pittsburgh's Strip District and scales the heights of Heinz Field's 700-level nose-bleed section to uncover the personal connections that have forged an unbreakable bond between town and team.

You'll visit a university art exhibit that explores Pittsburgh's football obsession in all its glory. How do Steelers fans entwine themselves with the team? This exhibit archives the ways. There are colossal collages of Steelers tattoos, a Troy Polamalu-groomed poodle, a scale model of Heinz Field that overtakes a fan's basement and an exact replica of a black-and-gold Steelers' man-cave.

Luciew makes the rounds with Pittsburgh historians who recount the Steel City's manufacturing fall and its football ascension. Laid off steel workers who could no longer wear their hardhats to work donned them instead for football games. And an army of migrating Pittsburghers fanned out across the country looking for work and gave birth to Steelers Nation. Today, there's a coast-to-coast collection of Steelers' fan clubs and bars that all point to Pittsburgh as its Mecca.

UPMC psychologists recount how humans harbor a natural drive to connect with something larger then themselves. In Pittsburgh, that human need is in overdrive, resulting in an epidemic outbreak of Steelers mania. Newborns are swaddled in Terrible Towels in Pittsburgh maternity wards. Football party hosts insist upon strict seating charts so as not to alter anything from one game to the next, lest they jinx the team. Children grow up forever equating Steelers football with food, fun, family and a burning desire to be great.

One proud product of Pittsburgh's African-American neighborhoods and its rough-and-tumble public schools recounts how the pursuit of excellence embodied by the Steelers helped elevate his own goals. This Pittsburgher now commands the lofty heights of high finance from atop a PNC banking tower. His story shows how the team that borrowed its name from Pittsburgh's old economy helped fuel the pride and effort necessary for Pittsburgh to forge its own renaissance.

And while the steel mills might have closed; the furnace fires all but extinguished; the ingots all grown cold, they still mass-produce one thing in Pittsburgh -- Steelers fans.

These are must-read tales of the team, the town and the towel-waving fans who love them both!

BREAKING NEWS!! All five of my full-length mystery/thrillers are now available in unabridged audio form. ZERO TOLERANCE and KILL THE STORY led the way in early 2013 from Audible.com. My newest mystery, LAST CASE, was brought to life next in a can't-miss sound-recording treatment. An equally fine performance of FATAL DEAD LINES is finished and is now available. Finally, SECRETS OF THE DEAD has just been released in audiobook -- completing my full mystery library in unabridged audio. The voice performances by an array of talented actors will knock your socks off, adding so much to the white-knuckle narrative of my ripped-from-the-headlines thrillers. I really hope you will check them out!

FROM THE AUTHOR:

If Hollywood was ever going to make a movie of one of my books, KILL THE STORY would be the one. It has everything -- a high concept, a deepening mystery rooted in actual events and more off-beat but convincingly real characters than you can count. This is journalism as I saw it -- both from the outside looking in and the inside out. It says nearly everything I have to say about the state of media today -- all without slowing the non-stop action one little bit. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I loved writing it.

Lenny Holcomb, my first literary character, spoke to me in much the same way the dead people of his obituaries speak to him. But after my first book, FATAL DEAD LINES, I found out Lenny and the dead people from his obits had more to say. Much more.

SECRETS OF THE DEAD, a specially updated sequel, completes Lenny Holcomb's intriguing saga, finally presenting his incredible story in full. I hope you enjoy it, discovering the many narrative arcs that bridge both books and come to a full and satisfying resolution by the final page.

ZERO TOLERANCE Is probably my most unique and unconventional book -- a thriller set in the cloaked, cloistered world of juvenile justice. Namely, a youth reform camp set in the outskirts of Pittsburgh, Pa. It also stands as my most researched novel to date. As a journalist, I spent years covering the Pennsylvania juvenile justice system at a time when the penalties and punishments for young offenders were being ratcheted up. All that authenticity is here -- along with a highly original plot that will have you guessing until the very last page.

LAST CASE, my newest thriller, is set in 1978, just as acclaimed horror director George A. Romero is gearing up to shoot his zombie cult classic "Dawn of the Dead" in the Monroeville Mall, just outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I was a bit too young back in 1978 to offer my able body as one of Romero's delightfully desiccated corpses in "Dawn of the Dead." But I will never, ever forget watching the Monroeville Mall - a place where I shopped for school clothes and cruised for girls - turned into a splatter-filled shopping fest for the undead.

I guess you could say it's haunted me all these years.

The book seemed very short and was disconnected stories that were not that interesting. I felt it was both a waste of time and money.
