The Little Black Book of Writers' Wisdom 1st Edition, Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 27 ratings

Author and journalist Gene Fowler put it best: “Writing is easy; all you do is sit staring at a blank sheet of paper until the drops of blood form on your forehead.” Anyone who has ever wanted or been required to create something more complicated than a shopping list or a Tweet knows there’s more truth than poetry in the observation. The process can be difficult, frustratingly so when we realize that although we use words all the time, coming up with the right ones can be a daunting task.

Even the most celebrated writers have reflected on this creative process, and their observations and conclusions are collected in this book. The compiler, himself no stranger to a blank page or computer screen, has selected the wisest and wittiest utterances on such subjects as why we write (Ernest Hemingway: “I have a good life but I must write because if I do not write a certain amount I do not enjoy the rest of my life.”); how to write (Anton Chekhov: “Don’t tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.”); and writing for money (Cormac McCarthy: “I never had any doubts about my abilities. I knew I could write. I just had to figure out how to eat while doing this.”).

It has been said that reading won’t make you a good writer, but it will make you a
better writer. Dip into this lively and useful treasure trove, and you’ll be well on your way.

I first enjoyed this book as a recent acquisition of our public library. Liked it so much I had to have a copy of my own, so I ordered it from Amazon. It's a handy-sized hardcover with 212 pages of quotes from various writers, modern and historical. It also contains many graphic depictions of writers, and all of the pages are printed on smooth glossy paper, which adds to the weight of the book. Some of the quotations seem to contradict the quotes of others, but isn't that what you would expect, since few writers would agree with universal rules that would apply to every author of fiction? So, disagree with some if you will, but I think you'll find most of the quotes worth remembering. I have many favorites myself, but I find myself attracted to one from Jean Rhys: "I like shape very much. A novel has to have shape, and life doesn't have any."

Although there are chapters devoted to quotations about poetry and letter-writing, the bulk of it is devoted to various aspects of writing fiction.

I think you'll find this book is a "keeper" and worth your money.

This little book contains not only the encouragement and inspiration you would hope to find in it, but also advice you can put right to work in your own writing. For example, I loved this quote on descriptive writing, from none other than Chekhov: "Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass." Illustrated with photos and artwork of famous writers, the printed volume is handsomely made and quite stylish; like the little black dress, you'll consider it an essential addition to your collection. Highly recommended!

Doesn't fit into my shelf of short books. Otherwise fun and fine.

This book is both witty and informative with only quotes to go on. Opinions in it vary but all in all you better understand the process and feel more comfortable in your own mind with your own undertakings.

This book can help writers have a greater sense of belonging, as all writers do share alot of things in common with one another no matter how known or unknown they are.

As a multiple-title published author, I had burned out and had nothing more to say. This book's snippets and sound bytes resonated with something I'd lost. It is a cover-to-cover collection of encouragement.
