The Concordat Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 274 ratings

Since his rise to power, Russian President Alexander Volkov has increasingly engaged in hostile activities as he attempts to rebuild the Russian Empire. In support of his tactics, the Russian FSB has forged a Concordat dated to 1939 in which the Vatican supposedly agreed to cease all opposition to the Nazi government in return for being appointed the official state religion of the Third Reich.

Planting the counterfeit in a Berlin apartment, the FSB engineer a plan to blackmail the Vatican via the son of a murdered former East German Stasi colonel. The Vatican reluctantly agrees to acquire the counterfeit to prevent it falling into the hands of the Church’s enemies, sending the head of the Vatican Police, Lorenzo Rossi, to Germany to negotiate with the blackmailer. But Rossi’s flight is delayed and by the time he arrives the blackmailer is dead and the Concordat has vanished.

Rossi follows a deadly trail to Paris and onto Moscow, where he meets Cathy Doherty, a CIA Agent with a passion for all things Russian. Together they set out to establish the origins of the Concordat, and its intended purpose. Armed with information provided by a CIA informant, the forger is identified. Will Rossi be able to recover the Concordat and flee Russia with his life?

Review

Heary "brings a sense of excitement and authenticity to his writing that pulls the readers along for the ride, throws them into the mud and then chucks them into the car as it speeds off with bullets pinging off the door panels." - Good Reading Magazine "This was a great crime story...that whisks the reader away...I would say without a doubt that this is a recommended read!" - Lovereading.co.uk"An enjoyable, fast-moving, suspenseful story." - Mystery People"His (Heary's) strengths lie in his ability to fuse dramatic tension, political intrigue, and even wry humor into a narrative that manages to be simultaneously informative and escapist." "Highly recommended for fans of thrillers in the vein of Dan Brown's and Robert Harris' works." - Kirkus Reviews - Starred review.

From the Author

About me

I was born and raised in Perth, Western Australia, one of the most isolated major cities in the world. My father was Irish and mother Australian, so I guess I'm Irish/Australian. After graduating from the University of Western Australia, I joined a global mining house and traveled the world. A thirty-year adventure that covered the globe.
I'm a latecomer to writing, having published my debut novel, The Concordat, in July 2018 - which incidentally was awarded a coveted Kirkus Star. In my writing, I try to create stories that are escapist while at the same time informative, with a complex but accessible plot.

Why write noir espionage and detective thrillers?

It was inevitable. I grew up during the Cold War on a diet of the Avengers, I Spy and The Man from Uncle. As a child, I wasn't interested in fantasy or space adventure. No comic book superheroes for me. I found what I liked in newspapers. Authentic stories of conspiracy and espionage.
To me there was nothing more real than the threat of nuclear war. East verses West and communism seems closer to home than kryptonite and indestructible villains.
I guess being a big fan of JFK was also a factor. It drew me towards the enigma of the Soviet Union and Khrushchev. The Cuban missile crisis and the Bay of Pigs still looms large in my mind.
As a young man, I found myself working in Tashkent than for 10 years in Moscow, where I lived only a stone's throw away from the Kremlin.
If that wasn't enough, I now live in le Carre's 'Small Town in Germany': Bonn.

So, you can understand that when I finally put pen to paper, the die was already cast. It would be murder, conspiracy and lies for me.

A great thriller, it was impossible to put down. So many plot twists and turns as we follow Vatican Police Inspector General Enzo Rossi, on the hunt for a document that holds the fate of Christianity in its words. Everyone is literally here, making this a fun read! Recommended.

An entertaining page turner. Well researched and vivid descriptions take the reader across Europe from Bonn to Moscow on the trail of a shadowy document.

I liked the action at the end especially but the characters were difficult to follow . It was a good story but not great.

From Russia with love …

Normally politics and religion are not really my cup of tea, but when I read the blurb my interest was awakened. I have never been to Russia, but I adore the language.

First of all I have to say that the author obviously invested a lot of time and effort in researching. I learned from the book but it never felt as if I was reading a textbook.

The story was fast-paced and filled with action. Was it over the top? According to me, yes, absolutely, but I love that. Enzo seemed like the Italian James Bond with Cathy as his beautiful side kick. Together they can conquer everything, can’t they?

There was a lot of suspense as well, but the author also adds a splash of humour to the mix.
4,5 stars.

Enjoyed the intrigue between The Ativan, the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian autocracy. Would recommend this book to others

Well written and fast paced that kept me wanting to continue reading to see what else might happen along the way

Writing style was somewhat amateurish, as was the predictable plot. Women were described as dressing "like a slut", while the male hero was the one who heroically protected his virtue--a turnabout character device that just came off silly.

Oh my goodness this book was superb!!

The pace was brilliant, the writing style was spot on and I loved the plot – everything in this book worked for me, I loved the setting for the story and the characters were well developed and believable, and for this kind of story that is what can make or break it for me.

The author clearly knows the topic, has visited the settings in the book and has carried out a lot of research and it shows in the execution of the story, he really brings it to life – I couldn’t fault it!

It is definitely 5 stars from me, an excellent political thriller that I loved – very highly recommended!!

Fair and Square
5.0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone in this racy action thriller
Reviewed in Germany on August 15, 2018
We are introduced to the hero of this novel with a great comedic episode and, rather unusually for an action thriller, a vein of quirky humour runs through the whole book, making it stand out from the rest.

The reader is immediately drawn into the action - and there's plenty of it - by Heary's succinct, racy style. With the main plot revolving around the acquisition of the Concordat (or a conterfeit thereof), the author manages to insert all the elements of a great read: it's all there - plot, intrigue, murder and even a smattering of romance to satisfy the more tender palate. It flits from one city to the next but with the mention of certain districts, streets or even restaurants within each location, a sense of authenticity is added to the narrative.

I found this book thoroughly captivating: it has fast-paced action, suspense, historical interest and for the romantics among us, even a little love!

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story

The story moved at a good lip but there were so many characters that it was hard to keep track of who was who or to get emotionally attached to them , and to care what happened to them. Still worth reading if you are a fan of this genre of book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could it have happened?

A newly brought to light agreement signed by Pope Pius 12 between The Vatican and Germany in 1936, accepting the Nazi way in return for Roman Catholicism as the state religion, is the focal point of this story. Is it real, or is it a fake? This is a strong narrative with endearing characters. The novel is both informative and entertaining.
