Formatting is poor. Data is decent. Ok for beginners.

Formatting is poor. Data is decent. Ok for beginners.
This is the 3rd edition of this book, from an NYT Bestselling author who owns a multi million dollar media company. I am currently on page 160 out of 229.If this review seems a bit harsh, it’s partly because I’d expect more coming from such a prolific author of more than a decade in such a position. All in all, a decent book for beginner to mid level bloggers. If you’re struggling with choosing a niche, site design, content planning, monetization or traffic this will likely give you a *general idea* of (or *thoughts about*) how to solve those common problems.Having extensively read up on articles and books and watched videos on YouTube, as most bloggers have, I’d say 90+% of this is available free online, though there are obvious advantages to having it all compiled and it all coming from an experienced blogger. That said, one of the first things that caught my attn, since it became so annoying throughout, was the formatting. The cover, by Emma Beckett, is very well designed. There is a typo on the back cover (“your platform, [line of blankness] as well as which...”), and the last sentence of the authors’s bio has a dangling participle. The margins of all pages are painful as they’re much thinner than a standardly formatted book so you’ll be spreading that spine way out beyond comfort—yours, not the book’s. The font size isn’t great. Too small. There are multiple formatting errors including orphans (p. 38, 44, 70, 76), widows (p. 73), paragraphs followed by no blank space (p. 106), and a number of typos (p. 154, “BUT what she took away from the course what [sic] every bit as powerful.”)The author explains she’s making sth like 5-plus million dollars annually, “7-figures”, and I don’t disbelieve that, and that she runs a media company. Life Well Lived Publications is the publisher of this book (not her Omnimedia 5-mill company, though it does say to send information requests to Omnimedia), but this isn’t a great rep of a multi million dollar enterprise. Its formatting is half a level above MS word.Graphics aren’t always easy to read (p. 54 and other pages where they’re a dull gray). A lot of helpful resources are pointed out on the authors website which is great in a way. Some readers might think this referral is an effort to upsell or get traffic to a $995.00 blogging course offered there, or to get readers to click on affiliate links in free guides and there’s nothing really wrong with that—the author does say she makes 92% of her blogging income from product sales... (p. 144) —but either way, the point that could be improved is, please, put ALL the referenced resource on 1 landing page, not spread throughout the site. Who reads at a desk in front of a computer? No one. So it’s phone. And various long urls typed in is just impractical. Is the book worth reading? Yes. Absolutely.Does it suggest many of the same things suggested elsewhere in other blogging blogs, books, courses and videos? Yes.Did I pick up new insights and tips? For sure, mostly on a general level.I understand that algorithms and what works in the present are constantly evolving and that sites are all different one to the next, so exact direction or specific advice can get dated quickly, however, some of the content is a bit too broad and not specific so reading it is a bit like okay you confirmed I’m probably on the right path (or not) and gave some general suggestions on what to possibly do.I’m a bit underliner and highlighter of books but on this one I didn’t find myself taking notes or photos or underlining or highlighting but that may be because I’ve already spent hours on YouTube with people like IncomeSchool, and Miles Beckner.

I have to admit, I was skeptical at first: What could a book about blogging teach me that I hadn't already learned in my 8+ years of blogging?

I have been reading Ruth's blog for YEARS and have always appreciated her warm, honest, and authentic writing style. This book feels like grabbing a cup of coffee with a close friend and listening to her tell her most trusted business secrets - that is, if your friend happens to be a super successful, internationally-known blogger!

This book is WELL worth the price. I have read many books on blogging - and most were gimmicky, at best. This book is the REAL DEAL.

The tips and strategies in this book are straightforward and achievable by just about anyone. She takes you through, step-by-step, on how to become a better blog writer and how to grow your blog.

My blog has always been a hobby of mine (I never intended to make money on it - I blog for fun). But lately I've wanted to expand my audience into something bigger. Through Ruth's easy tips, I know that I can grow my blog's audience in a way that is comfortable for me.

So, I am saying that even if you just want to blog for fun (and not necessarily for profit), this book is well-worth reading. I enjoyed it immensely - and felt it was better and more informative than any blogging class I could take or any conference I might attend.

This book is such a bargain at any price. And you know what else? You can be SURE that I will be the first in line to buy ANY book Ruth Soukup writes in the future!

This book is a real gem and a total game changer in the blogging world. It's a must read for all bloggers!

I appreciate how she shares many trade secrets and lots of information that she has learned blogging. This is by far the most helpful book on blogging I have read, shedding a whole new light on the job, what it takes, different ways to make money, what not to do, and resources to help you do these things. Great book, I see why people like it.

The book starts out with the author telling you to be awesome. She says this a lot through the book and I found it a tad annoying, however, it does all make sense as she gets into the details of the business of blogging. Each chapter has bullet points at the end that are a to-do list. I read this on my kindle, so I highlighted many sections that I will be going back to.

Topics she goes over in detail include Social Media and I found the section on Pinterest to be most helpful. She discusses Ad Networks, Affiliate Sales, Private Advertising, and Selling your own products. She gives links and insider information to a lot of internet companies that I did not know about. She explains how to make a blog schedule, and how to get organized with free schedule sheets. She also gives sample letters to companies and gives examples of how different bloggers make money using the above mentioned paths. I also learned about writing for companies that look like an ad, but are also a topic article. Very helpful stuff.

Again, this book has so much information in one spot it will save you lots of time searching and researching for this information. She really is generous with her experience and what has worked for her and what hasn't. I will recommend this book to friends and fellow writers.

I was attracted to this book because… I want to learn more about how to make the best use of my blog. It was part of a book club I take part in.

This book was about… four different areas of developing and supporting your blog: refine, grow, monetize and build.

Things I liked about this book… The book is presented in as straight forward manner. Ruth has shared information on what has worked well and hasn’t worked as well in her own successful blogging experience. This book has been updated from its original publication with additional insight and newer trends.

Why you should read this book…if you have an interest in an online business or in creating online connections, this book is a helpful guide.

This book lived up to the back cover copy…The back cover provides information concerning, the book, the revisions that have enhanced the original publication and informative information about the author, Ruth Soukup.

Awesome! This book is so great that a lot of the ideas here can be applied to other online businesses too (even if they're not blog-based per se).

Best part about this book: the updated 2014 edition, which is what I bought. The blogging environment was a lot different back in 2010 - 2012 (and a lot easier back then), so I knew that books written back then would be out of date for me for now. Ruth's book was one of relatively few books that had been written or updated in 2014 and onward. Very well done, lots of non-obvious tips and tricks, and lots of clear explanation not just about HOW to do things, but WHY.

One criticism: I bought the print version, and there are a few illustrations there that were obviously done in color for the e-Book version, but they wind up in black-and-white in the print version. Surely it could have been easy enough to change the way these illustrations looked in black and white to optimize it for the print book e.g. using dotted or dashed lines, or more strongly contrasting shades of gray? I felt rather frustrated at that. However, it was the only problem I encountered (it only affects literally a few small things) and it was not a major drawback. I still give the book a full 5 stars, it's still great despite this minor issue.

Overall, for blogging in 2014, 2015, and beyond, I would highly recommend this book. It's relevant for TODAY's blogging environment - no 'old school' or out of date stuff like older books have.

This book covers all the topics a beginner blogger should be looking at if they want to blog for profit. I enjoyed that Ruth included the ups and downs she has experienced while growing her blog. She provides valuable information in understanding ad networks, affiliate links and she doesn't say any of it is easy. It will take hard work and most likely a few years before most of us will see a profit so if you want to get into blogging for profit you should be in it for the long haul.

3.0 out of 5 stars Libro base, informazioni di buona qualita'
Reviewed in Italy on March 3, 2015
