Though this is a series, this book can be read as a standalone. It is the first book I have read of this series and I wasn’t lost as the author gave great but not overbearing backstory. In other words the writer keeps readers in the loop without taking them out of the story they are reading now. The story follows Isaac who is a former drug smuggler who is trying to turn his life around and do things by the book. In this quest, he has set up his trucking company and does charity runs. This routine life he has started takes a new turn when he is told that his brother Zane is in hospital after he was viciously bet up. When Isaac visits Zane, he finds out that he is in debt with a dangerous cartel and when Isaac tries to put things right so that his brother is out of trouble, the leader of the cartel makes a deal with him to make a shipment in return for the debt being settled. Isaac realizes that he can’t do this mission alone and contacts his ex-boyfriend who used to smuggle with him Darrell. Together they must pull this off while at the same time figure out if they should get back together.
The author sets up an intriguing plot here. The idea that Darrell broke up with Isaac because Isaac was staying loyal to his brother despite his dangerous ways also adds a lot of drama and depth to the romance element of this plot. I really liked the idea of the plot. It was suspenseful, gripping and intriguing. Readers are left on the edge of their seats hoping they can pull this off. Both Isaac and Darrell are easy to like and you find yourself rooting for them to get back together because they do seem to love each other and are made for each other basically. The dialogue between them is very natural, the chemistry is flowing and there is some brilliantly hot sex scenes.
I did like Isaac but my two favourite characters were Darrell and the young nurse Pansy. Even though he was nice to her, I think Isaac found Pansy a bit innocent which I didn’t like because I liked Pansy. She was trying her best. But the three characters are great and between the three of them they made the story work for me. Isaac and Darrell in main roles and Pansy as a cameo.
The book also deals with homophobia and prejudice in general against men who like men and doesn’t shy away from the pure evil thinking that comes out of that prejudice and the author was very brave to show that kind of prejudice in all its ugliness in this book.
This book is a short enough read. It’s very fast-paced and page turning. There was suspense in the mission, suspense in the romance and combined it worked a treat. A great action-packed adventure. The only flaw I have with this book is that Zane recovered desperately quickly and considering he was beaten till near death, I don’t know if that sounds accurate. Maybe I missed something but from my reading of it, he did recover a bit too quickly but I’m passing that over because I very much enjoyed the read.
A gripping adventure with great characters.
