About the author
Camille Picott has been writing Stories from the End of the World since she figured out how to turn on her family’s Apple IIe computer and wrangle a floppy disk into the drive. She loves zombies, hiking, and food (though not necessarily in that order).
She has a pet zombie named Steve who lives in her shed. He often comes out for family adventures and Instagram photos. (He is NOT a repurposed CPR dummy. He's a REAL zombie lovingly rescued from a dumpster who only happens to look like a repurposed CPR dummy.)
Stay in touch with Camille! She loves to chat about with her readers about the apocalypse, running, and her pet zombie (who loves beer). You can find her at:

I had never heard of Ultra Marathons before reading this book. Picott imparts enough knowledge to let people like me gain an appreciate of the sport, yet doesn't go overboard, which is a tricky balance to strike but strike it she does. The idea of running hundreds of miles to escape zombies and reach a loved one; I never would have thought of this in a million years, and it works. She also has her zombies display characteristics that I have not seen before, and it makes for unique challenges.
The characters are great! Kate is plucky, but grieving a recent loss. Her confidence in everything but running has been shaken. Again, Picott skillfully threads the needle of demonstrating Kate's shaken confidence without her becoming whiny. Frederico, her best friend and running partner, is great! He has his own demons and flaws, but a great counterpoint to Kate's intermittent lack of confidence in herself. They complement one another well, and are well-developed, multi-dimensional, real people. The obstacles they face are both universal and particular to running, and I was literally on the edge of my seat so many times, truly fearful of what would happen next. I was also impressed with Kate's determination.
There was only one thing that really bummed me out, and that's just because I am a particular kind of sucker. It worked in the context of the story, but I wish it had turned out differently. But it's not a detraction, just a harsher take on the apocalypse than I want. :-( The conclusion was very satisfying, and I'm looking forward to the next book and audiobook!
Warnings of language aside, there’s plenty of love for family and friends in this story as shown in her longing for her late husband, her ultra-running friend Frederico, and her son Carter. And after reading the first few paragraphs, you may want to make sure that you always carry a a bottle of hand sanitizer with you.
So Kate and Frederico make the ultra journey attempting to find her son in Arcata, finding and losing friends in the process. I’ve ridden the Levi Leipheimer Gran Fondo six years (with my riding friend Todd, a physical therapist who has a daughter named Miranda, a small hamlet Kate visits near the end of the book), so I know Picott weaves an accurate guide book of travel knowledge and includes a handbook of information about ultra running. When Kate describes the death of her husband, I was instantly reminded of Pedro Ilic, a Fresno tennis icon who played on the Fresno State tennis team and who died 1994 after falling and hitting his head while playing tennis.
Many reviewers are hoping for a sequel, including the narrator of the book, Gwendolyn E. Druyor. You need to get the excellent audiobook, which allowed me to string many tennis racquets while listening to the story.
My suggestion for a sequel: While on a training run, Kate finds a lost wallet and stash of love letters, returns them to the owner who is former Blue Angels pilot Lawrence Scott, who is grieving over the loss of his wife who perished in a wing suit accident in the Alps, and he is also conducting a personal and unauthorized search for people that survived the zombie infection, but are now indistinguishable from the normal population and still have the same appetite for human flesh, but are cunning and intelligent. and Lawrence thinks there may be a cure by communicating with the occupants of the UFOs that navy pilots encountered near San Diego, and the UFO aliens also offer to share their miniature nuclear fusion power devices, which allows the UFO ships unmatched speed but also world peace through unlimited energy availability, and the search encompasses travel around the world but includes Lawrence visiting his friends at Naval Air Station Lemoore and Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, and of course Lawrence is a triathlon athlete, tennis player, and ultra runner, while Kate, an only child, wants to help Lawrence with his work, is amazed when her mother offers the help of Kate’s six other uncles and aunts, each of which has an exceptional paranormal ability, and when Kate looks deeply into Lawrence’s eyes, she sees a lost soul, possible soulmate, and maybe the glint of a zombie.
Or not.
Cheryl Strayed hiked the Pacific Crest Trail in the book Wild to escape her personal pain, Kelly’s husband takes up tennis to assuage his grief over her death in the Amazon film 30-Love, and Kate runs ultra races for joy, therapy, and to find herself. Camille has a great relationship with her readers, and I received a free copy of the audiobook through her newsletter to her Touch (Sulan, Episode 4) book. But I can still genuinely say you will appreciate your time and have fun reading Undead Ultra.
The book is very exciting and there are a couple of highly emotional moments. There is also a fairly significant weakness. For example, at one point they get captured by drug dealers who think the two runners were messing with their drugs. The drug dealers do not believe that they are running two hundred miles to save their kids and the two runners never think to show them the text message chain that actually documents what they are doing. I don’t know if this would have mattered to the drug dealers, but most people would have showed it to them. Also, twenty-four hours into the zombie apocalypse and the drug dealers have already replaced their guard dogs with zombies? That seemed like an awfully fast adaptation to me.
Still, it’s an exciting way to observe the developing zombie apocalypse.

I'm gona read all your Zombie book ...
Loved it!!
As a middle-aged parent, I identified with the idea of a the main characters, and their quest to do whatever it took to protect their kids. I was a big fan of the platonic but deeply loving friendship between Kate and Fredrico.
I'm very glad I took a chance on this one when it popped up on bookbub.
Loved the ultra run aspects and how they were used to tie life and hardship together... loved the Characters and really just every thing. Would be overjoyed to read more and highly recommend this series!
