The Sister-in-Law: An utterly gripping psychological thriller Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 16,776 ratings

‘I had to pick my jaw firmly up from the floor when I sadly finished this fantastic novel. I started reading it on Friday night and couldn't take myself away from it until the wee small hours. I was captivated from start until finish.’ Goodreads Reviewer ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

‘You don’t think Jamie and I have secrets, do you? No, we tell each other everything.’ She smiled. ‘Including your dirty little secret. So maybe it’s time to start being nice to me?’

THE WIFE: Clare is ready for a break. It’s been a tough year and now she wants to put her feet up. Arriving at the Italian villa for their summer holiday, she decides it’s high time her husband and his family did some of the work. After all, her husband owes her…

THE HUSBAND: Even though Dan had his head turned by someone else, he’s realised the error of his ways. He’s here now, and he says it’s for keeps. Clare can trust him, can’t she? At least he’ll have his brother there, to keep him in line…

THE BROTHER: Jamie is the prodigal child, back in the family fold again after years of travelling abroad. But when he gets to the villa, he’s not alone. He’s brought a wife, someone none of them have met before.

THE SISTER-IN-LAW: Ella is everything Clare isn’t. Glamorous. Young. Influential. But she knows a secret about Clare. Something that has the power to break the whole family apart.

And there’s someone who will do whatever it takes to make sure that this deep secret never comes to the surface.

An utterly unputdownable, gripping, twisty psychological thriller, perfect for fans of Before I Go To Sleep, The Girl on the Train and Date Night.

Dan and Claire Taylor and their three children are traveling to an Italian villa for a family vacation. Claire's in law's Joy and Dan has arrived ahead of them so they can prepare the house. This is also Dan and Joy's retirement vacation, Dan will be taking over Taylor's small family business, so everyone is expecting this to be a fantastic vacation. The Taylor's are also expecting the baby of the family Jamie to join them in Italy. He's a bit of a nomad because he is always traveling to different countries. On the second day of the vacation, Jamie arrives at the villa. However, he's not alone and the family is shocked when he informs them he has just gotten married and this vacation is a honeymoon for them. His new bride Ella is tall, blonde, and gorgeous. At first, Claire is delighted to have a sister in law, she imagines them bonding and being close friends. Ella, on the other hand, has no interest in Claire and spends most of her time taking selfies and posting them on Instagram. In front of the family, Ella seems to be sweet to Claire as she is to the others. When it's just Claire and Ella, Ella's full of insults and snarkiness that is all directed at Claire. One night, and she's not afraid of letting the entire family know just what Claire did. Claire doesn't understand why her new sister in law dislikes her, and as she tries to figure out what game Ella is playing at, she knows she has to beat her sister in law at her own game and stop her from destroying everyone Claire loves.Ella is a master manipulator but it seems like she has met her match when she's up against Claire. Sue Watson has done it again with bo just a few twists placed in, and every time I thought I figured out Claire's secret, I was proven wrong. She does a brilliant job making Ella so despicable, I would have to yell at my book on Claire's behalf. Sue Watson is one of my favorite authors, I make sure to buy every book she comes out with. Main character Clare is the wife of Dan, oldest son of the Taylors, Joy and Bob. Joy reminded me a lot of the mother Marie, in Everybody Loves Raymond. The controlling, in-their-business face, and mother knows best attitude, but in a slimmer body than Marie ;) Their oldest son Dan works for his parents company and is married to Clare, parents of 3 kids. Dan’s younger brother Jamie is a vagabond playboy, but the apple of his mother’s eye (like Marie with Raymond).

The Taylor family is on their annual vacation, this year a villa in Italy off the Amalfi coast. Dan and Clare have had rough times in their marriage, caused by Dan’s roving eye. They looked forward to this vacay to reconnect. Then along comes younger brother Jamie and his hot new wife Ella. Drop dead gorgeous, conceited, an Instagram account with 25,000 followers, snapping pics constantly, as rude and mean as she can be to Clare, but covertly. What is it with her? Her manipulations and nastiness has the reader hating her, but invested in this story. I had a hard time putting it down at times.

Clare is a good person, a nurse by trade and a loving mother. She knows there is some agenda with this Ella but everyone else loves her, even her mother in law, Joy. She feels jealous of this new daughter in law moving in on her family, all of them. You feel sorry for Clare, but yet I got so frustrated with her... like why isn’t she recording Ella’s nastiness on her own cell phone, covertly, or snapping pics of her own? Until finally, around the 75% mark she shows some backbone with a plan to backfire on Ella’s Instagram. It works, but brings about unexpected repercussions.

A totally immersive read, with a couple of unexpected twists at the end that renewed my admiration for author Watson’s ability to weave a story and mesmerize us with it.

Now that I’ve finished this I still think that readers will find their disdain for Ella, the sister-in-law “from hell” justified, even though there is a reason for her agenda and her attitudes revealed at the end that we didn’t expect.

The epilogue wraps it all up nicely, and reinstated my respect for Clare. A hell of a story that entertained me for days.

I don't care for how it ended. I wanted to see how that Convo played out between Clare and Dan. Dan, who by the way, whose level of disgusting was on par with Joys. And the only character I truly liked completely took be by surprise, but I guess that's the point of a twisty thriller, right?

I didn't care for Clare, I found her to be too weak and forgiving. And I found Ella almost unbearable. Needless to say, none of these characters were likeable, but I did enjoy the story.

I found most of the characters hard to relate to. Joy Taylor was manipulative, Clare was so desperate for a family that she'd rationalize their relationship, Dan was the ultimate womanizer, and Jamie had no sense of responsibility. With Bob still water runs deep. The ending didn't satisfy me, but I can't think of a better one. At least we found out what Ella's motivation was.

This is a new author for me and the book is writing from a female perspective. As a man I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I couldn’t put the book down and I’ve purchased two more books by this author. A great read and an interesting look at family dynamics on so many levels. I highly recommend this page turner!

Great story telling, seen the plot before in another book? There was a spelling mistake, scarfing rather than scoffing the penne pasta.

However, still enjoyed the book and the descriptions of characters was faultless. Clever twist at the end took me by surprise.
