I grew up in Catawba County, North Carolina so I was very familiar with the Zahra Baker case. This book is heartbreaking. To see how this woman could do something so horrible to an innocent child.
Enjoy Heaven Zahra. You’re safe now.

The book, written By Hickory Daily Record journalists Richard Gould and Sarah Newell Williamson, is the behind-the-scenes story of the investigation into the murder and dismemberment of 10-year-old Zahra Baker. Zahra, a two-time cancer survivor from Australia, came to the US with her father after he married Elisa Baker. The stepmother eventually pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Zahra's story got media's attention because she was known in Australia as a valiant cancer survivor and the Nancy Grace Show's focus on the murder.

This account was well written and to the point. The author refrained from journalistic showmanship so prevalent in some of these books. Instead, there is a precise accounting of the abhorrent events leading to the arrest and conviction of the monster who perpetrated the crimes. In the cases of redundancy it seemed necessary in order to bring the reader back to a particular place and time. This account of Zahra's death and the parents subsequent trial is not meant to blatantly stir up outrage within the reader though there is much outrage to be felt. I would highly recommend this book and had it not been for the disconnection between some of the chapters, would absolutely given a five star rating. My heart pours out for Zahra and those who have endured abuse like this. She paid the ultimate price because of sadistic and selfish parents and through writing like this, will never be forgotten. Her place at Jesus feet is eternal. Perfect and whole. My only solace is knowing she is at peace. God bless Zahra baker.

I remember this tragic story living in NC. It broke my heart and still does. Such a sweet, innocent child that seems was so unloved. She deserved so much better!! I hope the evil stepmother never gets out of prison. She deserved the death penalty. I do hope her birth mother has found some peace in her life. Her father should have been held responsible for his daughters death in some way. Thanks to all involved in the search for little Zahra. May we never forget Zahra!!

This was an excellent read and a very good synopsis of a very tragic case.
I followed Zahra's case closely from start to finish, and this book is an excellent overview of the case. It also provides interviews with the police officers involved in this case from after the plea agreement was made.

As a North Carolinian, we all watched as this horrible story unfolded....what a terrible thing to happen to this sweet, innocent child...her step-mother is truly a MONSTER...I bought the book to see if there was anything re-deeming in the whole case...None what so ever...I hope the authors are not making any money on this book...any money made should be donated to the playground they have constructed in Zahra's memory...

I decided to add a review, I rented it from the Catawba County Library, home to Hickory, NC. I had so many doubts, and it being written by the HDR writers really had me not wanting to read it. I ONLY read it due to a project in a criminal course I am taking. It is hard to follow, jumping back and forth often from sentence to sentence. It is hard, to tell the story as it unfolds, and also throw in there the investigation and viewpoints of others involved. I still feel it could be improved, but that is just imho. Other than that, it was not to bad. I was looking for facts, looking to write about the elements of the crime, really First Degree Murder, but the deal dropped it to Second Degree. So, it gave me a few details I had not recalled to add to my term paper. I would like to add that I am an adult, over 30, not a child, I am an adult learner. I did not come here to bash HDR, do not know them personally and do not care. The book is small town writing. It served its purpose for my report. I did not love it. For the negative omg it is nasty or whatever, um so is life and we all got those details, well, not all of them but we all knew she was cut up and tossed. It was no secret, if you cannot handle those words, stay away from murder books. The Zahra Baker park is going and well, they finished a tree house like platform about a year or two ago and there is a splash pad nearby, assuming it is part of the actual park. Had hoped, that money would have made a really cool accessible park, it is accessible to some points. Since some lady or cry baby man was over there talking about profit. What about those profiting off October's awareness month events.... she did have cancer, twice. .. Park was built, and seems to be kept up. My kids have been there a few times. Wished the money would have gone to some kids group or foster group of some type for those in need, she was living in need.

Like so many people not only in my native Australia, but around the world, I have been affected by this horrible tragedy of innocence taken away. This book is an essential read for those who have been swept up in this unbelievable story. It is well documented and written. Not an easy read, but I would recommend it to anyone who wants more information about young zahra's life and untimely death.
