JC Paulino’s Efenians The Book of Life: The Seven Noble Truths is a well researched text with very good intentions. It is a critique of our modern ways of living, listing artificial food, sedentary work, over reliance on electronics, overuse of antibiotics, chemicals, obesity, lack of exercise, lack of connection to nature, stress,-all as causes for us modern humans being as sick as we are, -making our very DNA in danger of degenerating. Paulino’s book is a wake up call, an invitation to look at the state of the world ,-and to re-assess our own sense of well being and unconscious contribution to this degenerative way of living . Should we find that change is needed, the author offers clear pointers towards a healthier lifestyle, and a turning towards a more meaningful connection to the world we are a part of.
The elusive title: Efenians, is given as a term for ‘one who is the very best version of you,’- And this is what the author wants for us. He aims to educate our minds, employing scientific research to ground his arguments- and then he also seeks to inspire our souls towards greater wholeness and balance. The first part is focused on developing ideas and imparting information, and the last part gives a practical step-by-step breakdown of how this might work over a course of 7 weeks.
I admire the author’s intention and thoroughness. A great achievement!
It did however jar me, -reading about how the author supports the paradigm of unity of body-mind and soul and body - only to see him use a very mechanistic metaphor for the body…’a perfectly tuned machine’.. It seemed to me that all his efforts are pointing away from this very way of viewing a human being; a machine....machines don't have souls...machines in pursuit of profit…which is part of the problem he is posing. Maybe a different metaphor might have served his argument better. But all in all I found this an inspiring and hopeful read.

As a homeopath and nutritionist, I appreciate authors who encourage us to look at the body, mind and spirit from a holistic approach. The Efenian way of life involves considering each person as a whole, as a group of systems that are interdependent. I have studied nutrition books and countless works on healing, fitness, exercise, meditation, diet, and illness of mind and body, in my work. But I have also read books addressing some aspect of the spiritual path for thirty years. My bookshelves are overflowing: Scott Peck’s The Road Less Travelled, Many Mansions, The Four Areements, and books by Rumi, Pema Chodron, Dalai Llama, and Caroline Myss.

This book encompasses all of those areas; the author focuses on the interconnectedness of mind, body and spirit. He delves into the main issues of western life that result in stress, such as the unholy drives of profit and growth in our capitalist economy. This stress triggers the flight or flight stress response from the reptilian brain, which responds to all degrees of threats, whether real or perceived.

I particularly appreciated Chapter 9, regarding happiness. Our Declaration of Independence states that our rights include “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Do we need to PURSUE happiness? Is happiness not right there for us to choose in our life?

The author criticises our modern style of working and living and invites us to reconnect with the world we are part of and with each other. He offers concrete steps to achieve this. A few of his many suggestions are: engage in regular exercise, reduce sugar, work toward “Mind Mastery,” connect with nature, meditate, reduce stress, avoid chemicals and drugs, and consider healthy clean food to be the medicine you need. He offers a seven week plan to start making real headway with these suggestions.

This book is comprehensive, yet filled with the author’s passion and his plea for us to choose a different path for our own well-being and joy..

There is a ton of great wisdom in this book. You can surely improve on the version of yourself which can be the best of the best just by reading these truths. The book presents some awesome techniques on how to take care of the body and mind, how to deal with stress, how to limit bad stuff in your life. It’s both scientific and philosophical, so you’re in for a certain as well as a more thinking approach to the problem.
Some of the views of the book are a little too much though, but not worrying. There’s a chapter about diseases and how all of them are caused by nerves and stress, which is… a little too much! Overall though, I loved the book and will recommend it to my friends who are into this sort of reading as well. Will give it five stars although there are those mentioned lackings which are there but not really that serious.

Your physical health is important and this book provides some helpful suggestions on evaluating your health and steps to improve your health. The author’s give useful suggestions about the importance of a holistic approach and about getting to the root cause of your problems. The author also highlights the importance of a positive outlook on life.
You will find a lot of information about various scientific theories, including evolution. For each of the 7 Truths, the author provides a mini-biography (Darwin, Newton, Gandhi, Hippocrates, Galileo, Buddha, and Sagan). In Appendix A, the author proposes a seven-week plan to “become the best version of you”. Depending where you are now, this plan is extremely ambitious.
Although the author uses the words soul and spirit, most of the recommendations in this book are justified based on Science and the ideas of a selected group of leaders.

For readers looking for health and happiness, here are a few caveats:
Science does not have all the answers. (Read Science Set Free by Rupert Sheldrake)
Knowledge about what is spiritual and what it means to “be the best you can be” includes learning about God. (Read About Making Choices – Choose to Live by C. V. Kirkstadt)
Before attempting self-improvement, acknowledge you limitations and ask God for help.
