On her drive to Florida for a much needed vacation, Eva is carried away into mischief, as her speeding ticket that leads to her arrest becomes an unlikely opportunity for her and for Trooper Sebastian Sherman to fall in love.
The gentle, tongue-in-cheek humor typical of this author’s writing style is endearing here, especially when it comes to her Labrador, Flo, who is left behind with a dog-sitter before setting off on the journey: “Her nose twitched with the woodsy scents drifting into the car from a slightly opened rear window.
Now that Eva has left Flo behind, she lowers the convertible top and hits the interstate with abandon — practically inviting trouble. “When the spotlight from the police cruiser flooded darkness into day… she hoped a flirtatious smile might win him over.” But no such luck. Her lively chitchat with him soon turns snappy, and even worse, during the course of his investigation, he discovers that she has several unpaid tickets and a bench warrant out for her arrest in NJ,
While having her arrest pics taken, Eva sticks her tongue out at the police photographer, then spends the night in the cell, and is brought before Judge Ackerman, who asks how she pleads. “Guilty, I suppose…” With no money to rectify things, “she watched her miami vacation fly out the window, not to mention the non=refundable hotel costs.” Instead, she is sentenced to community service for a week.
As the chapters roll by — Monday Mayhem, Tuesday’s Trials, Thursday’s Belated Surprises and finally, A Friday Farewell — the relationship between Eva and Sebastian deepens into something new, turning the page into love.
