How to be a Yogi Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 30 ratings

A yogi is a term for a person who practices various forms of the path of Yoga, maintaining a steadfast mind, the process of transcending the lower self. These designations are mostly reserved for advanced or daily practitioners. The Shiva-Samhita text defines the yogi as someone who knows that the entire cosmos is situated within his own body.

A must-have for any aspiring yogi or spiritualist. Also interesting for the modern scientist.

Swami Abhedananda (1866- 1939) came to America at the request of his famous brother monk Swami Vivekananda (1863- 1902). He came to know many famous western intellectuals such as Max Mueller, Paul Deussen and William James. This book is a compilation of lectures given to American students of yoga. Yoga is part of the Hindu religion and philosophy. The chapters are: (1) Introduction (2) What is Yoga (3) Hatha Yoga (4) Raja Yoga (5) Karma Yoga (6) Bhakti Yoga (7) Jnana Yoga (8) Science of Breathing and (9) Was Christ a Yogi. A theme is that knowledge, whether science, philosophy or psychology, has to have utility and must be practical otherwise they are useless. Yoga then has to be studied, learned and practiced.

Amazing read! Beautiful and systematic explanation of the types of yoga and their inter-connectedness..

As Einstein once said, the definition of genius (or in this case, the enlightened one) is taking the complex and making it simple.

5.0 out of 5 stars Speaks to the inner truth of one's core.

Although a book of it's time and slightly strange in the way it is worded for modern use, the truths and insights of human desire to be at peace in abundance, receiving from an infinite intelligent source, without harm to others is intrinsic in all of us.
Learning to let go of desire and ego, to be mindful of God or Universal Creative force, to become a better human being and progress by allowing Grace to overcome Karma is the general teaching of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and Christian Faiths.
Well worth a read.
