Rage flooded through Kane’s veins. He wouldn’t lose those two poor souls. Without thinking, Kane called upon his vampire powers, leaped into the air and the condensing sensation of his body shrinking, his muscles contracting and his bones shortening, shot through him. Kane's arms transformed into wings, his vision grew keener, and his body shifted into a large bat.
Lucky he was able to transform. Sometimes the waxing moon allowed him to use his vampire powers. If it had been a crescent moon or a half moon, he’d never been able to call forth his powers and the victims would be good as dead. Although he was immortal, he didn’t have the ability to fight Palmer when Palmer was at full strength
“Cap’n,” Amadi yelled. “No.”
More crewmen joined in the protest, but Kane ignored them. He’d lives to save.
He sped toward Palmer. The lad ducked under water, but the larger, swag-bellied man remained slumped over a piece of wood or maybe he just floated on his gut.
Kane shrieked and he flashed his teeth. His muscles tightened, ready to battle.
Inches away from the man, Palmer skimmed the water and soared into the sky. Kane collided with him like a cannonball. Palmer nearly knocked the breath out of him. Black, white, blue, and orange colors blurred Kane’s vision, but he didn’t give up.
In one swift move, he wrapped his wings around Palmer’s thick body. Palmer arched his back and head butted him. Stars swam in front of Kane’s eyes and every one of Kane’s muscles strained and bulged, but he refused to let go.
They tumbled through the air with the wind brushing over them. Kane bit the back of Palmer’s neck, making him screech. Foul blood sipped into Kane’s mouth and his gut curled.
Suddenly, they fell into the dark water. Salt stung Kane’s eyes. Palmer arched again, but this time, he broke free.
He whirled around and bit Kane’s wing, tearing his flesh. Pulsing pain gripped Kane. He screamed and sucked in sea water that burned his lungs.
Palmer released him and soared out of the water. Ignoring the blinding pain, Kane clawed his way to the surface then burst out of the water, spitting out half the sea.
Cannons thundered. His ears rang, and black dots swam in front of his eyes. A cannonball whizzed toward him as if the iron had his name written on it. Adrenaline pulsed through Kane. He darted to the left, narrowly missing the shell.
Amadi cupped his hands around his mouth. “Cap’n.” Frustration filled his loud voice.
Sean lifted his fist. “What the blazes are you doing?”
Others joined Amadi and Sean into yelling at him to return to the Soaring Phoenix.
Palmer glided towards the Fiery Damsel. Blood dripped onto the ocean. Damn! If Kane chased him onto his ship, Palmer’s men would not hesitate to sever his head and he’d join the floating corpses.
A movement in the water caught his eyes. Damn sharks.
