I chose to read this novel because I am a bit of a paranormal adventurist. I enjoy learning about historic places and hauntings. I never searched out to read this particular author or this particular book. It was a search for "free ghost story novels" on my Kindle Fire and was led here.
The story is told by the author in narrative. It reads as a historical piece, similar to "Wuthering Heights". The characters are lively and, with each change of scene the descriptions of the environment are written so each of us can visualize each place and, quite possibly, hear every bump in the room.
I reserved one star because the author left us hanging in the end. There was no resolution to the beginning of the story in the end.

What a great find!!! I homeschool my dd and love to find old books to read aloud during literature class. This one did not disappoint! We were both engrossed in the book and couldn't wait to finish reading it. It's a great gem of a book!

This is a Victorian era novel (1886) written by Margaret Wolfe Hunderford under the pen name Duchess. It is a romance novel -- period piece -- whose characters are the aristocracy of the time. Although the haunted chamber plays an important role, the novel is not a ghost story. There are all the elements you would expect to find in a romance story: true love gone astray through misunderstanding and treachery, dastardly deeds, scheming, a bit of gruesome, and the like. In the end, of course, true love prevails and the antagonist is duly dispatched in a way most dreadful but gratifying. Reviewed by the author of The Children's Story, About Good and Evil.

The Haunted Chamber didn’t grab me at first but it sure made up for it in the end. The twists in the plot were very well done and unexpected.

Plots against young lovers that would make Iago proud, a castle with a haunted chamber steeped in body deeds, and an ending with justice done yet a horrible lesson for the wicked - an excellent novel for anyone looking for a little gothic escape.

More a romance than a ghostly thriller, but had nice just desserts ending.

I started reading in the morning and sat there till I finished it. What a horrible way to end locked in a room with no escape. Served him right though.

I read this as a Facebook 'book club' selection. I enjoyed it a lot. It's a nice old spooky story that holds up well to the passage of time.
