Nocturne (The Fourth Talisman Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,056 ratings

Nocturne, a wilderness of eternal night where magic reigns supreme.
Solis, a wasteland of endless day where ancient kingdoms vie for power.

Nazafareen is a Breaker, a mortal who has the rare ability to shatter spell magic—although her talent carries a price. With the memories of her former self erased, she comes to Nocturne hoping to start a new life under the triple moons of the darklands.

But when an assassin forces Nazafareen to flee to the sunlit mortal city of Delphi, she finds herself embroiled in a deeper mystery whose origins lie far in the past. Why was the continent sundered into light and dark a thousand years before? And what really happened to the elegant but ruthless creatures who nearly reduced the world to ashes? The new Oracle might know, but she’s outlawed magic and executes anyone caught practicing it. Nazafareen must hide her powers and find a way out of the city—before it’s too late.

As the net slowly tightens, something ancient and vengeful begins to stir in the arid death zone called the Kiln. A dashing daeva named Darius is pursuing Nazafareen, but so are a multitude of enemies. War is brewing again. Can she stay alive long enough to stop it?

Praise for Nocturne

"A historical fantasy that crackles with electricity…The narrative’s magical components never overshadow the players and their struggles. And the characters newly taking shape are thrilling to behold. Layered subplots featuring Culach, Mina, and Javid provide an embarrassment of riches. The finale primes audiences to learn about the legendary Vatras, who did what other elementals can’t—control fire." -

Haddie’s Haven

“The world of Nocturne and Solis is comparable to the expansive fantasy worlds found in epics by Tamora Pierce, Cassandra Clare, and Sarah J. Maas. With her lyrical prose, expansive world-building, and mastery of various voices, Ross is my new favorite for long-running fantasy epics.” –

From the Author

Hi there! Just a quick note to say that Nocturne is the first installment in a five-book fantasy series that follows up on the Fourth Element Trilogy. The storyline and world are totally new and stand alone as a distinct series, but some of the main characters carry over from that trilogy, so you may want to start with those books (though it's not at all necessary). If you do, there's a boxed set for the series and the first book, The Midnight Sea, is just 99 cents or free in Kindle Unlimited! Cheers, Kat

Top reviews from the United States

I have to say I was giddy with excitement when I found out Kat Ross was continuing Nazafareen's and Darius' story. I was even more excited to learn at the end of this book that there will be 5 books in this series!!! Talk about best Christmas present this year! I loved the Fourth Element trilogy, but I have to say, I think I might end up liking the Fourth Talisman series even more. Why? Because the character's in this series are more real. They have already faced wars, death, loss, love, and some serious bad guys/ladies, but have come out on top (minus some memory loss and PTSD). Now they face new problems and new dangers, but can reflect upon their past mistakes and not repeat them. So here's my review of the first book:
Pros:
1) Plot line: Really enjoyed the new story line and the world-building - I always loved Ancient Greece and Greek mythology so I was pleased to see that tied in.
2) Main Characters: I liked that Nazafareen is a strong and confident character who doesn't wallow in pity because of her missing hand or missing memories. She makes a decision and the goes forth and makes it happen. I also like her sarcasm and the way she describes things with a dry sense of humor.
3) Side Characters: I like the new characters, like Gerda (crazy old lady with a mean sense of humor) and Javid (ambitious young merchant who was in the wrong place at the wrong time). Moreover, what makes Ross such a great writer is that she writes complex bad guys. Culach in the previous trilogy was a pretty bad guy, but in this book, he is painted in a different light and you actually start feeling bad for the guy. I also like the romance that blossomed between him and Mina.

Cons:
1) Lack of communication: I really didn't like that Darius and Nazafareen didn't communicate. I also didn't like that Darius is shutting out the past. I know he realizes this mistake, but it annoyed me that they are separated throughout this book because they didn't talk to each other.
2) Lack of romance: I love relationships, but the only touch of romance in this book is between Culach and Mina, which is nice, but honestly, I want Darius and Nazafareen back together ASAP. I hope there is more in the future books.
3) Victor is annoying and needs to be put in his place. And Delilah needs to take a chill pill and attempt smiling more. That's all I'm going to say about that...
4) Cliffhanger ending. Everyone is so close, yet so far apart. Fortunately, the next book will be out in February, so we don't have to wait too long!
Overall, I loved this installment and I look forward to many more. I would recommend these books for anyone who likes the books by Sarah Maas, Maria Snyder, Kelly St. Clare, Alex Lidell, April White, and Lindsay Buroker.

Goodness, now that's what i call a good novel! really enjoyed this book - would've been 5 stars but the references to earlier times/plots/relationships made me crazy - but wow. I've read each of the 5 in the series and they are all quite good. Great character building, complex plots within plots, strong women leads. Actually addictive i think, as i simply couldn't stop reading until all finished. Now i feel bereft!

I was so looking forward to the continuation of Kat Ross' The Fourth Element trilogy, it was such a great story, I fell in love with those books and her characters and hearing about the upcoming book and it being released on my birthday of all days was so much better than Christmas morning when I was 8.
Before I dive into my thoughts and feelings on this book, I want to say "Bravo!" to its author, Kat Ross, who managed to continue a story where it left of without picking up EXACTLY where it left off or boring me to death with too many details.
Many stories have lost me for this exact reason. I'm a bit ADD & if the book can't get my attention and keep it from day 1, it doesn't tend to get a second chance.

So here I am, in the darkness of Nocturne where, as far as I can tell, Nazafareen has been for a few months, and still has no memory of her life before she arrived there, except for what Darius tells her, which for reasons I don't fully understand yet, doesn't seem to be much. And then there is Culach and Mina. Culach is a wounded warrior from a rival clan, well, a rival to Darius' clam, is not the type of person you would think that I would want to get to know and yet that is exactly what I want to do.
To me, that is the sign of a great author and a great story, when you want and need to know more about the story and the characters, even those you wouldn't think you'd be interested in. Mina, technically a hostage from Darius' clan, is the type of strong female I just love to read about. The type of woman who is comfortable enough with herself that she doesn't need approval from those around her, and she really doesn't need a man to save her, much like Nazafareen at times.
I will say I am a little sad that some of the surviving characters from the original trilogy have no made an appearance. There were a couple of them I was looking forward to seeing again, like Tijah & Acheamenes, but with Kat's books, patience pays off. Maybe I will see them again soon, or maybe I'll have to wait for a whole other spin-off series. Either way, I will continue to read on while I wait almost impatiently for the stories to continue, and leave you with the suggestion that if you are not familiar with Kat's books, you should most definitely consider becoming acquainted with them.

This book is not really finished. It sets up some of the background and politics for a story of two people called Nazafareen and Darius. They apparently have a history together but Darius is not honest about it with Nazafareen and she lost her memory. Lots of politics and a few chase/battle scenes. The world building and character development are good. The issue is the plot is left wide open and nothing is resolved in this book.

Nocturne by Kat Ross is N in my A-Z Challenge of Fiction Titles. This is part of The Fourth Talisman series, which is a sequel to The Fourth Element Series, so as a quick recap, I reread the review I had written previously.

The book starts with Nazafareen being held in Nocturne after she has lost all her memories. She has been advised not to travel without being accompanied, but she is aware there is more going on than meets the eye, convinced that if she could regain her memories everything would fall into place. After stowing away aboard an air-ship, Nazafareen discovers the other lands are not all they seem.
As with the previous series by Kat Ross, I couldn't put these books down, and ended up buying the rest of the series: Solis, Monstrum, Nemesis, and Inferno.
I don't want to give away too much of the plot of these books, but it is another epic adventure mixing magic, religion, revenge, power, love and action.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than the Fourth Element

I really have come to love the books of Kat Ross. She’s a master in combine new and interesting things with familiar bits of history. This is the first book of the second serie, which contain five books. The first serie is The Fourth Element and the story works better if you read those first. I liked the Fourth Element but I will loved The Fourth Talisman series, it’s even better. The story continues with Nazafareen and Darius. We see a lot of old friends but also plenty of new characters.
