I found this book to be intriguing, almost addictive. The story is well-written, using a deep point of view, that sinks the reader into the thoughts and feelings of a basically decent young man who has fallen into an unlikely, not to mention illegal, way to earn a living. As a female reader, I found it fascinating to be inside the head of a man who works so hard to understand women. Nicholas is a thoughtful, sensitive protagonist who made me care very much what happens to him. His story grows more and more suspenseful as the book progresses. Mr. Culhane's writing style is spare and fast-moving, yet he provides vivid descriptions and conveys deep, complex feelings with a few brilliantly chosen words. This book contains some fairly explicit scenes, yet it is not written as erotica. The story is written with great insight and care.

Absolutely love the writing of Ferber. Each story brings the reader to a different time...Edna Ferber time. There are lessons about life in each story, and it's easy to see oneself in some of the situations. An enjoyable read.

I don't know why it's taken me my whole life to actually read Edna Ferber. What a fabulous story teller and perfect writer. And in reading her various short works and novels a clear portrait of the woman herself emerges. As an author, I can only hope that I attain a reasonable portion of her abilities. I would count myself fortunate. She set the bar quite high.

Huge fan of Edna Ferber. Always a surprising ending. Thought-provoking. Find myself thinking about the twists she makes. Good reads. 1925 Pulitzer. Well deserved.

A great collection of short stories, set in the Midwest and Chicago in the early 1900's. Her characters are vivid and memorable.

Having read and enjoyed Edna Ferber several times, I decided to try this even though the title was off putting. It is a love story ultimately but along the way gives insights into history that I find fascinating.

I'm a big fan of writers such as Koontz, Clancy, Nora Roberts, etc and I felt like Ben Culhane's new novel was just as good as anything I've come to expect from those talented veteran writers. I enjoyed seeing a romantic story exclusively from the perspective of a man and I thought the way he portrayed a man who makes a living out of "loving" women, but who has no idea how to handle the genuine emotions when they strike him. He also has a fantastic grasp on making a fictitious character seem just as warm & relatable as someone you might meet tomorrow. I can't wait to see what he writes next!
