There was something familiar about this novel’s style and I couldn’t put my finger on it. It’s light, witty and cheerful but not quite the kind of comedy that I’ve come to expect from British novels. It’s more warm than ironic, but not too sentimental. The satire is subtle and the comic exaggeration of characters is slight. There are some “fish out of water” situations, but nothing outlandish. Then I realized that this is similar to the approach that Anthony Trollope took in THE WARDEN.
But this novel lacks the topicality of THE WARDEN. Instead, it has a splendid comical plot, a sunny fleshing-out of the old proverb, “Man plans. God laughs.” The step-uncle resents his step-niece’s spendthrift ways and is considering kicking her out of the house, but he’s also fond of her. The step-niece seems to be angling to inherit his money, but she’s also fond of him. In the end they all get what they want, but it’s not what you’d expect.
