A new middle grade fantasy-adventure series from Michael Dante DiMartino, the co-creator of the hit animated shows Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra!
In twelve-year-old Giacomo's Renaissance-inspired world, art is powerful, dangerous, and outlawed. A few artists possess Geniuses, birdlike creatures that are the living embodiment of an artist's creative spirit. Those caught with one face a punishment akin to death, so when Giacomo discovers he has a Genius, he knows he's in serious trouble.
Luckily, he finds safety in a secret studio where young artists and their Geniuses train in sacred geometry to channel their creative energies as weapons.
But when a murderous artist goes after the three Sacred Tools―objects that would allow him to destroy the world and everyone in his path―Giacomo and his friends must risk their lives to stop him.

I'm seeing a lot of reviews where people compared it with ATLA and LOK, which makes sense, but I tried to approach the book on its own terms since it's DiMartino's first work with prose.
DiMartino did not disappoint. Without ATLA and LOK in mind, the book on its own is great. The story is incredibly creative (no surprise) and well-paced, it's an easy read so most age groups can enjoy it, and the characters, both antagonists and protagonists, are diverse and relatable. There were no points where I felt bored, and I often found myself entering that comatose-like reading state where I'm no longer on my living room couch but immersed within the story. There are some puzzles the characters encounter and I would stop reading to see if I could solve the puzzle before moving on =P
I would recommend this book to anyone interested, and I'm excited to read the sequel next fall.
But the story! Many of you will know the author as the co-creator of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" and "The Legend of Korra," and it was Aang and the gaang that I was most reminded of here. (Though with the author out from under Nickelodeon's watchful eyes, this story gets quite dark and violent at times.) The central conceit of how this world works is a very cool one (I won't 'spoil' anything here), and the characters are well-drawn and relatable. Highly recommended to Avatar fans and children (or child-like people) of all ages, especially those with artistic leanings. I'm looking forward to the next installment.
And yes, it would make a great animated series. :)
In Rebel Genius, he introduces a world similar to Renaissance Europe, but with its own magical spin, similar to how the lands in his animated series are fantastic reflections of real-world cultures. In creating a world where artists literally create magic through their art, through the vehicles of mystical animal familiars, or geniuses, DiMartino has crafted an intriguing, compelling environment. He also sets up some potentially interesting mythology through establishing a quest for the world's "Creator's" drawing tools.
Unfortunately, where the book fell down for me was the lack of fleshing out of the details of this world. While the system of magic through art was explored in some depth, the characters, for the most part, were not given anywhere near the same level of attention. We are told that the villains of this world, including both the ruler of the country and the main villain of this novel, are evil, and we do see them acting like jerks. But it's primarily told, not shown, and they certainly aren't given any additional complexity.
Similarly, while the whole story hinges on the search for the Creator's Compass, it isn't made clear enough what the compass actually is. We're told it's an object of great power, but is that because it really is a tool that God (or a god, or the Creator, or whatever) really used to bring the world into being? Or is it something else? We don't really even get any hints as to what it actually is, beyond a Thing of Power to be Sought After, so it's tough to really get involved in the quest for it.
I don't want to make generalizations, but I will: I often feel that when TV or movie writers write a novel for the first time, they feel very much like treatments for movies or TV series: very visual, fast paced, but not a lot of detail or introspection. I feel like the writers are still writing for a medium where we see things happen quickly in front of us, and then we quickly move on. Unfortunately, this is a novel that could have benefited from a lot more character-building and explanation of the world.
Having said all that, I did enjoy this book enough to finish it, and am willing to give the second installment a chance. Hopefully, we will see the characters and the world receive some added depth and complexity.
