"Myths of Greece and Rome Narrated with Special Reference to Literature and Art" contains a wealth of easily accessible information about what educated people are expected to know. By knowing what the ancients placed in their myths, we know much about what they thought about the world, natural forces, people generally, people of their own nation, what they strived for, their hopes, and much more.
This easy to read book contains 30 chapters in which we are given an analysis of myths, told about the ancient view of the beginning of all things, such things as the Trojan War, and the myths of 26 famous mythical figures such as Jupiter, Apollo, and Mercury. The book also contains other material such as a geological table, and index to poetical quotations, a general index, and a glossary

This is a good reference for a casual reader or someone just getting started with mythology. The author summarizes a number of myths, covering all the major Greek and Roman gods, listing all their known names. Recognizable literature is sprinkled in where appropriate. She ties them together with what analogy they are making or what belief they support. She also includes a wealth of information on the complicated relationships between all the characters.

It's a good reference but I found it a bit dry to get through as a book. I like the index at the back that makes it easy to get to a specific character or story.

Ibought this book because I'm interested in myths of the world and most of the Books I buy are for future reference, this means that I haven't read it but I'm going to get around to it. I just need to go to the hardware store and get around to it ha.ha.

Not that it’s “bad”, just not what I wanted (looking for a book on the Greek myths).
