Being french-speaking I read a few Zola books in highschool but I thought they were heavy and not relevant to me. Recently I came across this free book on Amazon and I thought I'd give it a shot. Good thing I did because I really enjoyed it. Granted I thought a good Editor could have trimmed a few pages here and there but for the most part it was entertaining and to my surprise very illuminating. What caught me by surprised is that by the end of the 19th century, the business model for a successful larger retail business was already well understood and that it hasn't changed much since then. When I watched Mr Selfridge I remember thinking this man is a genius. But now I wonder if his story is not a spin on Zola's book which was written decades before that store was open in London.

Au bonheur des dames in a French classic that I read to help me improve in my French. Emile Zola died in 1903 so this novel written in the nineteenth hundreds and it show a particular time in Paris when big department stores appeared which send small shops in the ares to bankruptcy and poverty.
A love story evolves during this period. The book has a strong social context in Paris, the city of fashion and of social layers of the have and have not.
The style of writing during this period and maybe more particular to Zola, is very wordy with extremely rich descriptions of the the environment where the characters move. A very enjoyable book.

Emile Zola is one of my preferred writer. Au Bonheur des dames belongs to the serie of the Rougon-Macquart.
Each book has a different subject.
Au Bonheur des Dames is the story of the birth of Depatment stores, described to its smallest details. A little romance is added.
Once you start to read one book of the Rougon-Macquart, you want to read all of them.. They belong to one large family, and of course reading the French of Zola is such a pleasure.

It's a novel by Zola. What's not to like? It's very good, long and complicated with realistic 19th century characters who could be working at Ikea today. Not up to the level of 'The Drinking Den' or Germinal but certainly worth investigation by those who've discovered Zola.

Like another Zola book I attempted, wordy and repetitive. I started to read an English translation of one of his works about a year ago and gave up, it was so slow.

It's the same in French. I downloaded this book to help me learn French. He goes on and on and on about the same thing. I made through about 15% before going to Jules Verne.

I read this book many years ago. Had the urge to read it and many others by Zola again. First book I read on my Kindle. It was as good a read as it was when I read it the first time. My French is excellent. Still, there were words I couldn't find in the dictionary. However, this did not detract from my pleasure.

Well written and easy to read even for a non-French. I am not a shopper but thoroughly enjoyed reading about the making of this department store with all the details and tribulations. Then lots of human interest stories and the interminable love story between Denise and her boss. I read this book in about two weeks which is a record for me considering that it is a long story. It is probably more a book for women about women. Great read.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Plongez dans l'univers fascinant d'Émile Zola
Reviewed in France on June 21, 2023

5.0 out of 5 stars デパートvs.
Reviewed in Japan on September 30, 2017
