This rendition of Volsungasaga is for those who demand great accuracy in their translation. It is not for the casual reader, who prefers to gloss over words and terms.
The spare, stark storytelling of the sagas is well evidenced here. Intact are the references to Runic ciphers, the world view of our ancestors, and the constraints that defined life for the princely and warrior classes in those times.
Volsungasaga remains a powerful mythic expression, one immortalized by Richard Wagner, retold over generations which remains unique and prescient to this day.

It amazes me how much is out there but are yet fragments of what is left of Saxon culture. Remember that the early Christians destroyed the libraries of Alexandria. They burned all the Mayan history books too. Charlemagne neatly got rid of the pagan culture of his own peoples to placate Rome and the game of thrones. Peace out.

I'm only 20% done but as a lover of things related to the Norsemen, it's a great read. Hard to follow sometimes as it's in the archaic style, but I enjoy it that way. A modern translation would not be as good. Great on kindle because you can highlight the words you have trouble with!

The origin of some of the spices and flavors found in Tolkien and Martin. With dwarves and dragons, cursed gold and children cooked and served to their father. This is the genesis of all fantasy from Disney surrounding Sleeping Beauty with thorns and flames to a forest named Mirkwood.

An amzing saga, very well told. I'm not much of a scholar so can remark to much on the translation but I enjoyed the read

The folklore of Western Civilization is rooted here.
This is where the spirit and the strength of the western ethos is carved.

Not my favorite story, but this is an epic saga and was our book club's choice. We each had different versions/translations and comparing them, this one was the winner.

I first read this from the public library when I was young. It is good to have the chance to revisit.
